Friday. TGIF. Wind, snow and rainbows.

DSC_0292
Quite a bit of new snow fell on Mt. Hood over the last 24 hours, meaning if nothing else, the groom should be excellent today, and so will the places that hold the wind-favored fresh tracks. Light orographic snowfall will continue through 2pm, after which we should see sunshine. The snow level will be 2000′ early, rising to 3500′ in the afternoon. We’ll see an additional .1-.2” WV today, for 1-2” of new snow. Wind will be NW 20-25 early, fading to N 10 in the afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday looked like a nice day to be windsurfing or kiting. Sadly, I was in Portland. Hopefully you got it. Don’t worry if you didn’t – it’s just the beginning of the season, and there are many more days to come. You can expect west wind at 11-16 through the whole Gorge this morning (the higher numbers will be out in the sunny places). The wind will back off east of Maryhill this afternoon and hold at gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles. River water temp is 44 degrees, flow at The Dalles is 227kcfs, meaning it’ll be strong but wavey at Maryhill.

Saturday looks light and variable early with west wind at 5-10 in the western Gorge after 5pm. Sunday looks quite interesting. A weak weather system moves through early, a trough of low pressure sits along the coast, and a ridge of high pressure sets up over the eastern Pacific. This is a lovely setup, and should give us Dawn Patrol at 23-27 with 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington for much of the day. Monday afternoon looks good too, with relatively steady 25-29 from Viento to Doug’s. Tuesday also looks windy. Wednesday looks calm, warm and sunny. Yeah!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot over spring break about this huge list of things I need to get done. Need is a strong word. Perhaps I should say “want to get done”. I’m chipping away at that long list of things that’s been circulating in my head for a while. You know… planting a persimmon tree, making a Seahawks fleece ninja suit, putting irrigation in my garden, purchasing another bookshelf for the piles of books on my floor…

All these things require some sort of big effort on my part for various reasons (the tree, for example, required being in Portland…) And that efforting gets rather tiring.

So, I decided to give myself permission to dedicate some of my spring break time to doing something just plain silly that I’ve been wanting to do for a while. I created a White Sprinter Van map of the world. It still requires some more work (and more WSVs), but it’s started. And it made me giggle the whole time I was doing it.

It’s important, I think, to give ourselves time to do nonsensical stuff, stuff without purpose, stuff that’s just plain entertaining. Make some space for that for yourself today, and have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly to mostly cloudy this morning in the Gorge, with light showers falling from the sky. Such weather will continue through early afternoon, followed by less clouds and more sun later in the day. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Light west wind. 99% chance of rainbows.

Saturday may see just a few sprinkles in the morning, but will be just-plain-cloudy for much of the day. Steadier rain moves in after 9pm and continues overnight, because 40% more rain than average already this year isn’t enough. Anyway, light west wind on Saturday combines with a less than 5% chance of rainbows. Sunday brings occasional showers mixed with sunshine all day long. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. There’s a good chance of frost above 500′ on Monday, so be prepared for that.

Road and Mountain Biking

Looks like we had .27” of rain yesterday, and that’s a good sign that Post Canyon is going to be way too muddy to ride. With more rain falling right now, Syncline will be your only hope today. Out on the roads, if you wait until the afternoon, you’ll have some sunshine combined with light wind. Looks like a nice opportunity. Looking at the weekend, tomorrow looks good for Syncline and road biking, with dry weather and light wind until late in the evening. Sunday looks showery and very windy. In other bike news, the Gorge Roubaix race the weekend of April 3rd is still looking for volunteers. Sign up and help keep a good thing going.

Upcoming Events

Friday mornings at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run: 4.1 miles that earns you a free cup of coffee and a donut. During the day today, there’s a fat bike festival at Meadows. Tomorrow at Meadows, there’s a free avalanche awareness clinic. Mark your calendar for next Sunday, April 3rd, for an HRATS trail work party in Post Canyon.

Have an awesome day today!
