This is some very tricky forecasting conditions we have right now. An upper level low is right on top of us, and that’s destabilizing the atmosphere. As evidence of this, I present early-morning thunderstorms way out east in the desert. Anyway, the 7am gradient was .05 (pdx-dls) and .06 (dls-psc) with early morning westerlies in the single digits in the western Gorge and low teens east of The Dalles. Now, models suggest one thing today (I’ll tell you that in a minute). However, the weather forecast suggests that wind won’t materialize due to increasing clouds and showers this afternoon. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Models suggest we’ll have westerlies at 15-18 pretty much everywhere (with the exception of cloudy Stevenson, which will stay in the single digits to low double digits) by 11am. That’s likely to happen. Then the models think we’ll have 15-18 in the west with 21-24 from Swell eastward in the afternoon with a late burst of 24-28 from Doug’s to Arlington.
That’s all fine and dandy for the wind models to suggest that, but if the atmosphere is as unstable as the convection model suggests, the wind will either die off or become ridiculously up-and-down in the afternoon. So, your best bet today is to get on the water early, get what you can, and hope for stability this afternoon. If the sky clouds up completely, it’s best to give up on your windsport plans and go to plan B.

See below for details.
Looking at Saturday, the pesky upper level low moves east. We should see 7-10 from Stevenson to Viento early with 13-16 from Viento to Arlington first thing in the morning. By afternoon, we’re looking at 23-26 through pretty much the entire Gorge. Sunday starts off with 13-16 from Viento to Hood River, maybe Mosier too, and picks up to gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Maryhill in the afternoon. Monday currently looks like 26-30 in the afternoon. Oh… river flow at The Dalles is 190kcfs, temp is 63, and 2270 Chinook made it past Bonneville yesterday.
Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

Random Morning Thoughts
As you may have figured out, I’m into somatic psychotherapy. One of the pieces I find fascinating is how our body language can affect our mood and vice versa. We humans, like other animals, have certain universal postures that convey messages to others. Know how a dog looks when it’s being submissive – tail tucked, head down, shoulders hunched? We do a similar things when we’re being submissive – rather than standing tall, we hunch a little bit. We may look down and away. Taking such a posture will also bring up certain emotions.
You can try it right now, if you like. Look down, drop your head, hunch forward just a bit… Now do the opposite: straighten up, look forward, and raise your head. Did you notice how your mood shifted a bit too? Uh huh. You just learned something. You can impact your mood by mindfully shifting your posture!
Now don’t get me wrong, you’re not going to solve every one of your emotional struggles by changing your posture. But if you can notice your posture in various situation, you can change your reactions in those situations, and that’s powerful stuff. Not convinced? There’s a TED Talk that touches on this theme. Your body is an awesome thing. Use it wisely. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 708 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Today is going to look a lot like yesterday. Expect a partly cloudy morning with a cloudy afternoon containing a possibility of sprinkles and thunder. Portland might see a funnel cloud or two, but thankfully we’re not Portland and we don’t have tornadoes. Temps will be in the low 50’s this morning and the mid 60’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. 3% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. .05% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 40’s (brrr!) early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
I went for a ride in Post yesterday because someone has to inspect things around here. It’s dusty. June is the new August, you know. Because June is the new August, Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are now open, with trees down on Ape Canyon. GP website says “not the best for mountain biking”, but you like an adventure, right? No word on 450/Fifteenmile/Gunsight/Boulder Lakes. All the road rides are open. Whoopdee is closed. Hospital Hill is in the process of having (delicious) cows removed, so don’t park at the cattle pasture or the cowboys will wrastle up your car.
Upcoming Events
As always on Friday, you can do Kickstand Coffee’s 4 mile run and get free breakfast in the form of a cup of coffee and a donut.
Looking at the weekend, the Wanoga Trails bike race happens in Bend tomorrow. Skibowl has a Super D race on Sunday. Closer to home, there’s a trail run in Post Canyon at 8am, a wildlife hike at Memaloose Hills at 2, and a half-day meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 1. There’s also a free youth fishing clinic at Spearfish Lake on Saturday at 9, GorgeNet’s anniversary party is at the Hood River Waterfront from 11-6 on Saturday. Parties not your style? There’s a free half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi on Saturday from 1 to 5pm.
Finally, it’s time to head to Mosier for U-Pick cherries. They’re ripe, and Mosier has reopened. The Twin Tunnels Trail from Hood River is only open through the tunnels. The gate at the far end will remain closed until things safety-up at the cleanup site in Mosier. So, you cannot ride your bike unless you go over Old Dalles Road. That would be a big ride, but since gravel grinding is the new thing, you should totally do that.
Have an awesome day today!
