Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

A windy, sunny Friday is on tap on the mountain. Sun sticks around through Sunday afternoon, after which a strong cold front slams into the Northwest. That one should drop about a foot of snow on Mt. Hood before we go back to sunny weather in the middle of next week.

Expect sunshine all day Friday. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ all day and all night. No precip. Wind: NW 20-25 in the morning, 25-30 in the afternoon, and 20-25 overnight. Saturday also looks clear and windy. The FAF will be 8000′ in the morning and 9000′ from mid-afternoon on. Wind: NW 20-25 early, W 15-20 in the afternoon, and WSW 20-30 overnight.

Sunday starts clear. Snow arrives around 5pm. The snow/freezing level will be 9000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and will fall to 1500′ or so overnight. About 0.9” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight, for 8-10” increasingly dry snow. Wind: WSW 20-30 in the morning, WSW 40-50 in the evening, and W 40 overnight. A few more inches of snow are in the forecast on Monday with the snow level around 1500-2000′ with 40mph west wind. Sunshine returns on Tuesday.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

At least four days of westerlies are on tap, and all of them will meet or exceed the 100 rule with the exception, perhaps, of Monday. For Friday, we starts with 7-10 all through the Gorge and gradients of .10 and .04. Westerlies slowly build today. They’ll max out at 24-27 from at least Mosier to Arlington this afternoon. A forecast for clearing sky in the western Gorge suggests the 24-27 will extend as far west as Stevenson too. River flow is 127kcfs. River temp is 44F. High temp forecast is 56F. 100F total!

Saturday starts with 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier and 5-10 out east. Eastern Gorge wind fades in the afternoon, maybe even going calm. In the west, you’ll find gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles. High temp: 64F. Sunday starts with 5-15 all through the Gorge. As a cold front approaches in the afternoon, the wind picks up to gusty 25-30 from Stevenson to Boardman. It might even be “very gusty” with strong gusts thanks to increasing upper-level wind. Rain moves in to the western Gorge around 5pm and shuts down the wind. High temp: 61. Heads up for Monday: strong offshore high pressure drives westerlies at 28-32 form Mosier to Threemile.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

On vacation until the end of snowsports season. Will return in April or May.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partly cloudy sky this morning turns clear this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy to start and then sunny. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 60’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday starts sunny and turns partly cloudy around sunset before becoming rainy overnight. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 60 later. Light westerlies early. Strong westerlies late. No rainbows.

Cycling

Cows are out on Hospital Hill. No parking at the corral. No dogs on the trails. No exceptions. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they let us use their land, and in return, we respect their rules! Post Canyon: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer.
