Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s all easterlies, all the time, through at least Monday. Peak wind is scheduled for Sunday, but there should be enough wind to get you on the water, should you desire, starting Saturday. Friday kicks off with very light west gradients, but the wind will switch directions midday. Expect peak easterlies mid-morning at 15-20 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Stevenson. The wind fades to 10-15 early afternoon. River flow yesterday was 98-134kcfs, river temp is 51F, and high temp forecast is 48F.

Saturday starts off well below freezing. Just a heads up! Brr! Easterlies will be in the 20-25 range from Iwash to Stevenson. They might bump up a little bit in the afternoon. Of note: easterlies will establish at upper elevations too. This will limit the wind strength on the river. Expect speeds to underperform gradients. High temp: 45F. The wind confines itself to the river on Sunday. Expect 40+ at Iwash and 30-35 at Stevenson. Easterlies hold or even build a little into the afternoon. Start temp: 25F. End temp: 42F. Wind strength falls a bit on Monday, but Iwash and Stevenson should still be 30+ to start the day. No sign of westerlies in the next week, but hey, we’ve got the sunny east wind buffet going!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Dry, sunny weather continues all the way through the latter part of next week. After that, models mostly agree on wetter weather, but they don’t agree on how warm or how wet it will be. Well, they do generally agree that the first system to come in will be cold enough to dump some snow, but after that, they hint at pineapple-scented warm tropical moisture. Maybe. Lots of spread in the 850mb (5000′) temps for next weekend. In the meantime…

Expect a sunny mountain day for Friday. The free air freezing (FAF) level will be 0-1000′ this morning, 1500′ this afternoon, and 0′ after midnight with 850mb temps at -2C or so. Expect breezy, chilly conditions in the hills: NE 25-35 this morning, NE 20-25 this afternoon, and NE 15-20 after midnight. Less wind, warmer weather, and just as much sun is planned for Saturday. The FAF starts at 0′ and rises to 9000′ in the afternoon with 850mb temps at +4C, upper 30’s Fahrenheit. Wind: NE 15-20 early, E 10-15 in the afternoon, and variable to 5 after midnight.

Sunday will be warmer and sunny. Morning FAF will be 8000′. Afternoon: 10,000′. 850mb temps rise from 2-6C in the morning to 3-8C in the afternoon. It’ll feel mighty warm thanks to light and variable wind. Monday looks similar, as does Tuesday. As a matter of fact, not much happens until the end of the week. At that point, models point to wetter weather. The first system looks cold enough for snow in the mountains (unless something changes). After that, there’s just too much spread in the models (for now) to know if the slopes will be picking up snow or losing it in an atmospheric river. The details should come together over the next several days. In the meantime, enjoy the sun!

Hood River Weather Forecast

Partial Nothing this morning gives way to sunshine. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and upper 40’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Saturday will be partial Nothing and partly high cloudy early and sunny later. Temps start in the upper 20’s and rise to the mid 40’s. Easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday starts with part of a Nothing and may finish with a little Nothing and partly cloudy sky. Temps start in the mid 20’s and rise to the low 40’s. Easterlies. No rainbows. Ditto all the way through the end of next week, pretty much.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Amayah’s has their one-year anniversary party in Biggs. Also, every first Thursday, 1pm to 4pm, they are offering free meals to all. Yup. That’s right. Free Amayah’s once a month!

Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
