Friday. Sun. Rain. Snow. Dirt. Wildflowers. Rainbows.

DSC_7564-Edit
It’s a warm and slightly overcast, but still sunny, Friday morning on the slopes of Mt. Hood. The day will become increasingly cloudy, with precip starting up around 4pm and continuing, on-and-off, through Saturday morning. The snow level today will be 10,000′ early, 7500′ when the precip hits, and 5500-6000′ overnight. We’ll see .6” water value (WV) in this system, and most of that will fall as rain. It’s possible we’ll see some west snow mixed in at the tail end. Wind today will be SW 10-15 all day, turning to W 15 after midnight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Saturday starts out with a few lingering sprinkles or snow flurries and quickly turns sunny. High clouds move in during the afternoon, and Saturday night will be partly cloudy. The snow level will be 5500′-6000′ early, dropping to 4500′ during the day and rising back to 5500′-6000′ in the afternoon and evening. Wind will be W 30 early, slowly dropping to WSW 15 in the afternoon, and turning to SW 15-20 overnight.

Sunday starts out cloudy. Precip starts up around 10am and continues through 4pm. As of right now, it looks like the evening precipitation will stay to the west of Mt. Hood, but that could change. If nothing changes between now and Sunday, the snow level will be 9500′ early, dropping to 5000′ or so when the precip hits, and dropping to 2500′ as the snow falls from the sky. We’ll see the snow level drop to 1500′ overnight. Approximately .6” WV will fall in this system, for 4-6” of new snow that starts out pretty wet and heavy and turns dry and fluffy. Wind on Sunday will be SW 15 in the morning, rising to SW 20-25 by midday and picking up to WSW 30 in the afternoon.

Monday’s weather depends a lot on the actual location of the precipitation. It might stay to the west of Mt. Hood, and it might not. That said, the snow level will be 1000-2000′ on Monday with moderate WNW wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

My class last night dealt with existential-humanistic therapy. It was pretty amazing – the < ahref=http://bobedelstein.com/ target=blank>lecturer has been a practicing counselor since before I was born. Many things he said resonated with me, but one in particular caught my attention. When helping someone work through a situation, he asks them to consider (not explicitly) what they don’t know about a situation.

In other words, our experiences lead us to expect certain outcomes from a situation. It’s very hard to expect outcomes that our counter to our experiences. To expand potentials in our world, we need to be open to new possibilities. Otherwise, we’re doomed to recreate the same experiences over and over – self-fulfilling prophecies, right?

So, it’s important to consider options you haven’t experienced. Say you’re going into a situation you’ve experienced many times (a conversation with your partner, a job interview, asking someone out). You have an expectation of what will happen. Start thinking about other ways the situation could go. Maybe think of how it might go for someone you like, respect, or admire. Believe it or not, it’s possible things could turn out that same way for you. Being open to other possibilities, experiencing them in your mind, makes them more likely to occur. Give it a shot. If nothing else, your mind will expand. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s awesome dirt at Syncline, there’s awesome dirt at Post, and nobody’s said nothin’ about Whoopdee. The road biking will be good for much of today too, as temps warm up. Just finish up before 5pm or so, because it is going to rain this evening. That rain will likely take Post off the options list until Saturday afternoon, and more rain Sunday morning will take it off the list again. Also, you can expect very strong west wind Saturday morning that makes Syncline not-so-much-fun to ride.

Upcoming Events

Every Friday morning at 7am, there’s the Kickstand Coffee run: 4.1 miles, one free cup of coffee, one free donut. Friday at 4:30, there’s a free Hatha yoga class at the Heartgate Sanctuary in Oak Grove. If I have my week right, there’s a free fat bike demo ride at Mt. View Cycles at 6pm. It’s every other week, and, well… you know… me and my calendar… There’s a trail run Saturday morning at 8am at Post Canyon.

Have an awesome day today!
