Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

The forecast for the next five days or so is on-and-off snowfall on the slopes. As you may have noticed, snowfall tends to underperform predictions this time of year. Adding to the difficulty in forecasting is a switch in the colors/divisions on the GFS QPS model. Suffice it to say that I’m having to recalibrate, as I’ve said before. It’s not the quickest process, so bear with me!

Looking at Friday, we have a cloudy day on the slopes with flurries during the day and light snowfall overnight. The snow level will be around 3000′ all day and will fall to 2500′ overnight. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. That’s 1” new snow. Another 0.2” to 0.3” is forecast overnight, for 2-3” more. Wind:” SW 15-30 all day becoming WSW 25-40 overnight.

Saturday looks snowy as westerly wind powers orographic snowfall. The snow level will be 2500′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000-1500′ overnight after the precip stops. About 0.7-1.0” WE is forecast during the day, for 7-10” new. Just a trace is forecast overnight. Wind: WSW 25-40 in the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, and W 25 overnight.

Sunday starts with high clouds, stays cloudy all day, and sees snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 1000-15000′ in the morning, 1500-2000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. No snow during the day. 0.6-0.8” WE overnight for 6-8” relatively light new snow. Wind: W 25 all day building to W 45 overnight.

Snowfall continues on Monday with another 3-6”. A break on Tuesday gives way to another round of snow on Wednesday. This is what we like to see in March: the snowpack continuing to build! Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A couple days of moderate, gusty westerlies sandwich a day that’s likely to draw at least some of you out on the river. Friday starts with variable wind to 5mph. As a weather system pushes inland, the wind picks up to gusty 18-23 from Avery to Arlington. By “gusty”, I mean “very gusty and unreliable”. River flow is 102kcfs. River temp is 43F. High temp forecast is 54F. Saturday starts with gusty 12-15 all through the Gorge. Another weather system swings through, and high pressure offshore builds to 1034mb. Westerlies jump to gusty 22-25 from Stevenson (rainy) to The Dalles (probably not rainy) with 28-32 from Avery to Boardman. High temp: 51F. Sunday starts with leftover westerlies at 12-16 or so all through the Gorge. The wind drops to 7-11 in the west and rises to gusty 18-22 east of The Dalles in the afternoon. High temp: 49F.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Saturday looks drizzly in the morning with sprinkles in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 50 later. Moderate westerlies in the morning. Strong westerlies in the afternoon. 99% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks dry during the day and rainy overnight. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Moderate westerlies. Cycling

Trailbuilder request: GP is CLOSED. Those of you riding it are doing significant damage to freshly-shaped and not-yet-compacted trail. All that work you’re destroying is being done by about three volunteers. STOP. They anticipate they’ll be able to reopen the trail around April 1st, but if you keep riding it, it’s going to take longer. So, skip GP and ride the brown pow that’s all over the rest of the trails. Excellent dirt is to be found in the lower sections of Post, on Syncline, at Nestor, on Hospital Hill, and probably at Columbia Hills (where there will be lots of Grass Widows and other early flowers). Remember: it’s still winter, and freeze-thaw is possible. If you hit freeze-thaw mud, please turn around so you don’t do permanent trail damage. Whoopdee is especially susceptible to freeze-thaw. Please avoid it until nights warm above freezing.
