Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! If you’ve been wanting a rest day, you might just get one today. That said, you might also get a chance to get on the river late today for the executive session. Tomorrow, Saturday, looks like a better day with wind at some point all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. An atmospheric river takes aim at us on Sunday, shuts down the wind, and drops a bunch of rain. In the post-frontal conditions on Monday, we’ll have very gusty westerlies of some sort focused on the eastern Gorge. After that? Models generally agree on some sort of warming, but there’s a ton of range in how warm it will get and exactly what pattern will drive this. In other words, there’s not really any way to pin down a forecast for next week. Yet. Before I forget… the DW race previously scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed until better conditions are forecast. Ok. Let’s dive in!
Friday starts nearly calm. The wind turns easterly, briefly, at 10mph or so near Stevenson, mid-morning. Then the wind turns calm again. Late in the day, after 5pm, it’ll pick up to 14-17 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River. River flow over the last 24 hours was 198-232kcfs, river temp is 58.46F, and high temp forecast is 78F. Looks like a great day for flatwater stuff!
A weak front approaches from the west on Saturday. This reinforces cloud cover on the west side and keeps temps down. Out east, rather more sunshine allows for rather more heating. Offshore? Not much assistance there, but it could be worse. All this combines for Dawn Patrol at 22-25 from Stevenson or Viento to Mosier with 18-21 from Lyle to Avery and 10-13 to Rufus and Arlington. We’ll have a few hours of solid conditions at Swell before the front destabilizes things and shifts the wind east. Expect a drop to 16-19 from Swell to Hood River with 22-25 at Stevenson and Mosier. Mosier, and areas from Mosier to Rufus, quickly climb to 24-27. Wait until mid to late afternoon, and you’ll find gusty 26-29 from Lyle to Arlington (not a great direction for The Wall). From Stevenson to Mosier, we’ll see a late afternoon rebound to gusty 19-22. High temp: 71F with partly cloudy sky.
Sunday? Write it off. An unseasonably strong atmospheric river, the phenomenon previously known as the Pineapple Express, slams into the Pacific Northwest. We’ll have pouring rain much of the day (and night) with light west wind. High temp: 68F.
Extended (when things get fuzzy): On Monday, rain early gives way to drizzle midday and dry weather in the afternoon. The setup is far from ideal, but we should see inconsistent teens to low 20s in the west and mid 20’s or a touch more out east. Beyond Monday, model spread increases. Let’s wait until we have a better sense of what’s coming (probably heat) and how it will set up (unknown) before making any predictions. Have fun on the big river!

Friday will be clear to start and will add some high clouds later. Temps start in the low 40s and rise to the upper 70s. Calm wind most of the day. Light to moderate westerlies late. No rainbows. Saturday starts with some high clouds and ends partly cloudy. Temps start in the mid 50s and rise to 70 or so. Moderately strong westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday starts cloudy and turns very, very wet. Temps start in the low 50s and rise to the upper 60’s. Light westerlies. 11% chance of rainbows.

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. Tum-A-Lum has a block party 5/31 4pm to 7pm. The downwind race for this weekend has been postponed.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs.
