Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s a cloudy start to the day on Mt. Hood, and the models show a little bit of snowfall today. The snow level will be 5000′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ under clear sky after midnight (which technically is a free air freezing level!). We’ll see around .2” water value (WV) during the day today, for a couple inches of new snow. A little more will fall tonight before the sky clears, giving the mountain another half inch or so. Wind today will be SSW 40+ all day, turning to WSW 30 after midnight.
Saturday starts out clear and turns snowy by the afternoon. Light snow continues on-and-off overnight. The snow level will be 1000′ under clear sky early, rising to 2500′ midday and dropping back to around 1000′ after midnight under clear sky. We’ll see .2-.3” WV between 5am and 5pm, for 2-4” of new snow. Another .1-.2” WV falls overnight, for 1-2” of additional snow. Wind on Saturday will be WSW 30 until 5pm or so, W 30 after that, and W 10 after midnight.

Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Friday morning, and there’s a light easterly breeze out there. As an unseasonably strong weather system moves northward along the coast today, we’ll see strong southerly wind develop across our forecast area. This is a pretty unusual setup, which means I’m a bit unsure of what will happen. I think we’ll see light wind in the western Gorge all day. East of The Dalles, where’s there’s more exposure to the southerlies, we’ll probably see up-and-down, gusty SW wind at 25-29. There’s also a chance of thunder and lightning as the atmosphere destabilizes. In other words, this isn’t really a great day to chase the wind. River temp is 45 degrees and flow at The Dalles is 390kcfs.
Saturday starts off with very light west wind. We’ll see the wind pick up to W 7-11 from Stevenson to Hood River with W 15-18 east of Mosier in the afternoon under mostly sunny sky. Sunday morning looks clear and cold with east wind at 15-20 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Steven’s Locks. As of right now, Monday looks like W 16-19, strongest and steadiest east of Mosier.

Random Morning Thoughts
I have a few things on my mind this morning, and I’m struggling to pick which one to write about. Since that struggle is a microcosm of one idea, I’ll go with that one. Decision made.
The tricky thing about making decisions is that there’s rarely one that’s completely “right”. In making one choice, we give up the other choice. The loss of one road in favor of another can involve grief, regret, and other painful emotions.
Many times these difficult emotions and thoughts arise in response to us questioning whether we made the “right” choice or not. Here’s the thing: generally speaking, the bigger the decision we’re contemplating, the more likely it is that there will be both upsides and downsides to each of the options.
The only thing we can do is to make a choice, accept that it’s the “right” one for us, and grieve the things we’ve lost by choosing this path over another. When we understand that this is the natural process of decision making, we can decrease our struggles, and we decrease the time it takes for us to reach our fullest acceptance of our chosen road. So there you go. Get out there and make some difficult choices and do some grieving for the roads not taken. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Syncline is good. Hospital Hill is good. Whoopdee is now open, and there is a work party on Sunday at 9:15 at the Whoopdee parking lot. Columbia Hills and Easy CLIMB are good to go. I’ve heard rumors that Post is open from Lower 8 Track and Mitchell Ridge down. Above that, there is tons of downed trees and snow. There’s lots of good road biking and gravel grinding to be had right now, especially with light wind over the next three days. There’s a work party on the Whoopdee trail on Sunday. Meet at the Whoopdee parking lot at 9:15.
Upcoming Events
Looking at the weekend, Saturday is the Fred Meyer fuschia sale and a half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi. The Mosier School is hosting the RWJ Health Prize celebration on Saturday. There’s an interpretive hike at the Trout Lake Marsh on Sunday, and there’s a work party on the Whoopdee Trail Sunday at 9:15. In response to Greg Walden’s prior refusals to hold a town hall, his constituents organized one for this Saturday from 4-6:30 at Hood River Middle School. In response to this, Walden decided to hold two town halls in the Gorge next Wednesday: 11am in The Dalles and 3pm in Hood River. These incredibly convenient times for working folks are now in your awareness.
Have an awesome day today!
