Friday. Ski Hood this weekend.

In a happy turn of events, it snowed all night on Mt. Hood and continues to snow this morning! Mt. Hood Meadows will be open today, tomorrow and Saturday with MHX, BC, and Easy. Timberline is aiming for Bruno and Pucci today. If you’re trying to pick a day to ride between now and Sunday,…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

We’ll see overcast sky with flurries for much of today with clear sky overnight. The snow level will be around 3000′ all day today, with .1-.2” water value (WV) falling in the form of flurries for 1-2” of new snow. Wind today will be WSW 25 in the morning, slowly fading to SW 15 tonight.

Tomorrow starts off cloudy and stays that way all day long, with a chance of precipitation after midnight. There’s actually quite a bit of moisture headed toward the Northwest tomorrow, but it (thankfully) looks like the bulk of this warm, wet air mass will stay to the north and west of Mt. Hood, leaving us with a dry day for fun riding! The snow level will be 4500′ early, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 5500-6000′ after midnight. We’ll see .2-.5” water value between midnight tomorrow and 4am on Sunday. With the snow level around 5500′, that’s a tough call – wet snow? Mixed precip? Let’s call it 1-3” of snow for now and see how it’s looking tomorrow. Wind Saturday will be SW 20 early, rising to SW 40 in the afternoon and SW 45-50 overnight.

Sunday morning starts out cloudy with either snow flurries or mixed precipitation that last through late morning. The sky will clear briefly early afternoon before clouds return in the evening and another round of warm precip hits after midnight. The snow level Sunday will be 5500′ early, dropping to 5000′ after the weather system moves through and rising to 7000′ after midnight. We’ll see .3” WV between 4am and 11am, for, argh, mixed precip? A couple inches of snow at 5000′? It’s borderline, and tough to make a call. Wind on Sunday will be SW 45-50 early, dropping to W 25 midday and becoming SW 35 in the evening.

Monday looks warm and wet, with the snow level between 7000′ and 8000′. We’ll see 1” of rain in the morning followed by heavy rain in the afternoon. Another round of heavy rain arrives on Tuesday. At this point, it’s looking good for colder temps and significant snow in the Wednesday/Thursday time period.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have light and variable wind this morning with an E .01 cross-Cascade gradient. The wind will perhaps switch to light westerlies at 5-8 this afternoon. The river temp has dropped quite a bit with this cold snap; it’s now down to 45 degrees. Expect east wind tomorrow at 30-35 or a touch more, and east wind at 30 Sunday morning and 20 Sunday afternoon. Those speeds are for Rooster Rock. Knock off 5-10 for Stevenson.

For those of you wanting to watch the wind speeds at Stevenson, you can check the town’s weather station.

Random Morning Thoughts

As many of you may have heard, Ed Wilder, owner of Da Brewshop (aka HRBS), recently suffered a major stroke. Springhouse Cellars is hosting a benefit for him tonight, and many, many other local businesses are donating a portion of their beer sales, yoga classes, and various other services to help cover Ed’s medical bills.

Ed’s misfortune has given Hood River yet another chance to shine. So many businesses and people have stepped forward to support him, and there are almost 500 people on the Keg for Ed Facebook page. We have an amazing community here – it’s small enough that each person is an individual, each person is known well enough to receive this kind of love.

There’s another aspect to this tragedy: Ed is young. We all think we’re invincible. We think misfortune and major illness only happens to those older, unluckier or unhealthier than we are. The truth is that misfortune strikes somewhat randomly. The lesson is to love your friends like each day is the last time you will see them. When you are with your friends, be 100% present. Let them be 100% present with you. Connect while you can, because that moment may be the last chance you get.

Love your friends, love yourself, and love our little town. Have an awesome day, and make it to Springhouse tonight if you can.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s going to be a big old Nothing today in the Gorge – cloudy sky with temps in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s (maybe) this afternoon. We may see a few sprinkles this morning, with the possibility of dry weather for much of the day. Light wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow will likely start out with the Nothing and temps in the mid 30’s. However, the sounding model says we’ll be below freezing, so do be on the lookout for icy roads. Temps will climb into the low 40’s in the afternoon, with showers possible after midnight. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday starts off cloudy with a few sprinkles possible and dries out in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

The gym is your gym, and the spin bike is your bike. Unless you’re one of those gravel-grinder or fat bike folks, and even then, the roads are icy and snowy. Speaking of fat bikes, every other Friday (including today), Mt. View has a free fat bike group ride with lights after the shop closes. If you don’t own a fat bike, your first demo (with lights) is free. Give them a call today to see if they’re still planning on playing tonight.

Upcoming Events

This morning is the Kickstand Coffee Run. Show up at 7am and jog 4.1 miles, and you’ll receive a free cup of coffee and a donut. Coming up this evening at 7pm, Springhouse Cellars hosts a benefit for Ed Wilder, owner of the brewshop by Artifacts. Ed suffered a major stroke recently, and the entire town is coming together, with many, many businesses donating a dollar from each purchase to Ed’s medical bills. If you can swing by this event rather than going to your usual bar, please do. Suggested donation to get in is $10, and $2 from each pint will go to Ed.

There’s a trail run at 8am tomorrow, and there are two free yoga classes on Sunday: 9am at Samadhi (most awesome) and 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
