Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! I’ll get ya a forecast this morning, but I’ve got to take tomorrow off. It’s pumpkin weigh-off day, and I have a long, early-morning drive. The lack of forecast tomorrow may not matter so much – the wind looks relatively light for a few days. But not today.

Is this feeling helpful? If so, go ahead and make a contribution using Paypal to support it. Send $19.99 or more, and I’ll send the forecast to your inbox for a year.

Friday starts with light offshore gradients. A strong, crisp, quick cold front slams into the Gorge. This one has ample upper-level wind, which means we could see reality out-perform models. Model predicted speed has dropped by 7-10mph since yesterday; we’re looking at 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River or Mosier prior to the rain arriving with 5-10mph after the rain starts. Models then call for gusty 25-28 from Rowena to Boardman. The rain eventually makes it all the way to Boardman. As that weather system hits the Rowena area late morning, the wind will shut down. Out east, the wind will drop. Now that we’ve looked at the model prediction, let me speculate: with upper-level support at WNW 40kt+, I think areas east of The Dalles could over-perform today. 30-33 seems totally possible. But you’ll want to drive preemptively; the strongest wind in any given location (western Gorge or eastern Gorge) will only last a few hours. River flow over the last 24 hours was 65-113kcfs, river temp is 65.66F, and high temp forecast is 62F.

Saturday sees the return of high pressure, and with it, lesser gradients. As a matter of fact, the day is likely to start dead calm. Easterlies pick up mid-morning to 14-17 at Stevenson and Iwash (Rooster) Rock with 12-15 at Viento. The wind holds into the afternoon and perhaps evening. High temp: 72F.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

On Sunday, we’ll have easterlies at 14-17 at Iwash and Stevenson for a few hours to start. A few cold hours – the low temp is 44F. By midday, the wind turns calm. It then switches to westerly at 10-13mph from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: 75F.

Extended: Monday looks like 11-14 near Swell, Tuesday might be a bit stronger, perhaps 16-19, and Wednesday looks similar to Tuesday. It’s worth noting that there’s quite a bit of range in the predictions for Tuesday and Wednesday, but they do look stronger than Monday. That’s all for now. Have a great day on the river!
