Gorge Wind Forecast
A ridge of high pressure sitting over the Northwest squishes the wind into almost nothing for Friday, delighting the flat-water paddlers and road bikers. Thermal low pressure moves to the east late Saturday into Sunday, bringing back the westerlies.
For Friday, you can break out the sunscreen and flat-water paddle board. We’ll have light and variable wind to 10mph for a few hours early in the morning. A brief period of easterlies at 10-15 near Rooster Rock midday might get you on the water. Other Gorge locations, all the way to the far east, will see easterlies at 5ish. By late afternoon, the wind goes dead calm from Rooster eastward. River flow is 223kcfs and temp is 53 degrees.
The heat low shifts over Portland on Saturday, baking the City. Records will fall. As that low moves eastward in the afternoon, higher pressure to the west will drive some late afternoon Gorge westerlies. The day starts light easterly, perhaps 5mph or so. By noon, we should be seeing west wind at 5mph from Stevenson to Viento. From then on, it’s an upward build that ends at 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles by 2pm and out to Rufus by 5pm.
A better, but not stellar, westerly setup will be in place to start the day on Sunday. The elusive Dawn Patrol will be present at 22-25 from Viento to Arlington with 12-15 near Stevenson. That wind holds all day through the entire Gorge with peak averages of 24-27 from Stevenson out to Threemile. Remember: Never leave wind to find wind! Monday’s forecast currently looks like 19-22, and we’ll want to keep an eye on Tuesday afternoon for a chance of something stronger.

Road and Mountain Biking
There are still lots of wildflowers out there, so please do ride right now before they are gone! If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. There is a parking area 0.5 miles farther down the road. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
