I’m tempted to protest this weather by not forecasting wind, because obviously, if I don’t write a forecast it won’t be 100 degrees this weekend. Anyway, since I can’t change the incoming high pressure system and accompanying scary-warm temps, here’s your wind forecast. We did have a .03 westerly gradient this morning at 7am, likely due to a weak weather system (hence the high clouds) moving through. The gradient and accompanying light wind will disappear quickly, leaving us with glassy conditions with just a touch of an east breeze. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Saturday looks stupidly hot, perfect for going swimming or floating around on a river. You may want to book a whitewater rafting trip for the weekend. Anyway, we’ll see east wind at 15-20 early at Stevenson and Rooster, rising to as much as 20-25 at Stevenson and 25-30 at Rooster midday. In the afternoon, the rest of the Gorge, Viento to Arlington, will see east wind at 4-7, which will be a lot like having someone turn a blowdryer on you.
Looking at Sunday, it’ll be even more stupidly hot than Saturday, with triple digits in the forecast. Along with that, you can expect east wind at 10-15 early in the morning, going to oppressively hot, totally calm, glassy afternoon perfect-for-waterskiing weather. And whitewater rafting. Do that on Sunday.

Now, of course, you’re all wondering (as am I) when the totally awesome nukefest cooldown will happen. Models have been agreeing on Wednesday for about 72 hours now. That said, Monday looks quite windy for Dawn Patrol, with 26-30 right off the bat and 28-32 or more during the day. Tuesday currently looks like 24-27, and Wednesday, when the high temp is forecast to be 71 degrees, looks like 35-45. Yup.
You may want to acquire that 3.2 or 2.9 or tinykite you’ve been not-having for years. Remember, if you purchase that tiny piece of equipment, you’ll be much happier for the rest of your life nuking windy days. May I suggest, windsurfers, that you give Hot Sails a call? Their 2.9 and 3.2 Superfreak sails have the stability, predictability and forgiveness of much bigger sails. Plus, they are made of fabric and are nearly impossible to destroy. Worth every penny, I promise. You’ll have that sail for the rest of your life, and you’ll be very, very glad of it when your friends are sitting on the beach whining about being overpowered.
I have both those sails, and I’m never overpowered. But then again, I’m built like your standard cart ox, so that helps a lot on those windy days.
Finally, I’ll just keep reminding you of this one: CGWA has a bunch of contests happening this summer – photo, Strava, and video. Get more information about those contests right here.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.
Random Morning Thoughts
I’m reading this awesome book on trauma right now. The book speaks at one point about the caregiving action system. It speaks to this in the context of a caregiver-child interaction, but the point can be generalized to other relationships.
Basically, our nervous system gets upset and fired up when someone we care about is upset. We get anxious, our heart rate goes up, our muscle tension increases, etc. When we turn to our upset friend and connect with them limbically to provide them support, our nervous system is soothed, and we too are brought into a calmer space.
In the therapy world, there’s a fair bit of talk about caretaking. It is sometimes interpreted as a sign of maladaptive behaviors. Given the fact that caretaking soothes the caretaker’s emotional system, I would argue that caretaking is a lovely (if sometimes maladaptive) response to stressful situations. This caretaking response, in words, goes something like this: “I’m upset, so I’m going to be kind to those around me, because it makes me feel better.” I certainly do this, so I’m not just BS’ing you on the basis of some book I’m reading. Works for me. Give it a shot.
This is an evolutionary system, in theory, so you can take advantage of it. Give it a shot sometime when you’re stressed out. Do something nice for someone around you, and see if it makes you feel just a tiny bit better. Leverage your biology to soothe your mind. Pretty awesome, huh? Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
If you like it cool, you better open up all your windows and let it in this morning, because cool is going on vacation for a few days. How’s your friend AC doing? I hope they’re in town, because without AC the next two days, you’ll be feeling mighty lonely. Expect partly cloudy sky this morning and sunshine this afternoon with upper 50’s early and mid 80’s later on. Light wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts off sunny. We’ll probably see high clouds or maybe even thunderthingies in the evening for an epic sunset. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the (fuuuuuck) upper 90’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. I guess we could see a rainbow in the unlikely event of thunder.
Sunday looks sunny and hot, but will probably start out with a few remaining convective clouds and an epic sunrise. Temps will be in the mid 60’s (ugh – too warm for morning) early and near 100 degrees (earliest ever by two weeks) in the afternoon. We’ll cool down into the 80’s on Monday. The Big Cooldown is currently scheduled for Wednesday.

Road and Mountain Biking
I finally made it out for a Post Canyon inspection yesterday. Here’s what I can tell you about the mountain biking right now: if you go to Post, you’ll find all my friends! I started with one group of friends, tried to go home and study, and ran into another friend, forcing me to take a second lap. As for the dirt, it’s still in pretty decent shape down low, with the exception of Mobius, hereby renamed Moonscape. I talked to some people who rode Dirtsurfer, and it’s blown out and dusty.
The 44 Road trails are reportedly a mix of dust and tack. Whoopdee is basically closed for the rest of the summer due to logging, so you can take that off your list. In road biking news, holy heck, I need to finish up this email so I can get out and ride this morning. Overcast, cool, and no wind. What more could you want? Melting pavement? Ok, you can have that the next two afternoons when the temp will climb near 100. HRC, btw, has a work party tomorrow morning at 9am at Binn’s Hill Staging Area.
Upcoming Events
Today is First Friday in Hood River, and Timberline and 2nd Wind Sports are teaming up to bring down snow and throw a rail jam this evening. If you’re downtown this evening, swing by 301 Oak for a fundraiser for Hood River County School District sports (because they’re not funded, for fuck’s sake – since when don’t we fund kids’ sports?) Tomorrow is the Hood 2 River Relay from Mt. Hood Meadows to Hood River – if you’re doing it, make sure you’ve got warm wax on your skis and plenty of water to drink.
Other events this weekend include a trail run at 8 on Saturday in Post Canyon, and a trail work party meeting at 9 at Binn’s Hill staging area. On Sunday there’s the White Salmon Springfest races (1k/3k/10k?), 3 free yoga classes, ping pong, pickleball, touch rugby, and ultimate frisbee.
Have an awesome day today!
