Mt. Hood Forecast
2021 is starting off drizzly on the slopes, and the next few days will bring cycles of rain and snow. Keep a close eye on the forecast to figure out the best timing to play in the snow. For New Year’s day, it’ll be drizzle or mist on the slopes all day with rain becoming snow in the evening. The snow level will be 6500′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Just a trace to a 0.1” water equivalent (WE) falls as rain during the day. About 0.6” WE falls in the evening and overnight, probably as 0.2” rain and 0.4” WE wet snow. Call it 2-4” of new. Wind: SW 15-30 in the morning, SW 25-50 in the afternoon, WSW 30-40 after midnight.
Saturday starts with snow, switches to mixed precipitation in the evening, rain overnight, and snow in the wee hours of Sunday. The snow level will be 4500′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.3” WE falls as snow during the daylight hours. That’s 3” or so of heavy fresh snow. About 1.4” WE falls overnight. That starts as snow, quickly becomes mixed precip and then rain, and ends with snow flurries after midnight. Best guess? 2-5” snow at 5000′ at the beginning of this round, an inch of rain overnight, at least, and a trace to an inch of snow after midnight. Wind: WSW 20-40 most of the day builds to WSW 40-65 late evening and turns to W 50-55 after midnight.
Icing and winds may delay lifts on Sunday. The daytime looks dry. The evening starts snowy and turns rain and then turns snowy again, barely. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 2000′ mid-morning, and will rise to 5000′ when the precip starts. If it stayed there, things would be good. Unfortunately, the snow level will rise to 6500′ overnight and fall back to 5000′ after midnight. No precip during the daylight hours. 0.7” overnight, maybe starting with a couple inches of snow and ending with an inch, but mostly falling as rain at 5000′. Wind: W 50-55 before dawn, WNW 35 and fading during the day, SW 10-25 in the afternoon. That builds to SW 35-65 in the evening and drops to SW 25-50 overnight. A few inches of snow are forecast Monday. This overall pattern continues into next week. Happy new year!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
Easterlies rise to 20-25 this morning near Rooster and Stevenson. They fade to light and variable wind later. Saturday brings westerlies at 10-13 west of Swell and east of The Dalles. The central Gorge looks calm. Overnight, the wind builds to W 30-35, and will probably still be there Sunday morning. That wind fades quickly to W 12-15 and turns around to E 20-25 by the afternoon.
Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s
As needed until next spring and summer.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Friday looks gray and cloudy during the day and rainy in the afternoon and evening. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 40’s later. Light easterlies. 2% chance of rainbows. Saturday will be rainy. Temps will be near 40 early and in the upper 40’s later. Light west wind (or maybe just calm). 64% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks rainy early, dry most of the day, and quite rainy overnight. Temps will be near 40 early and in the upper 40’s later. Westerlies early in the day turn easterly in the afternoon. 89% chance of early rainbows.

Cycling
Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
