Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

My what a wild ride it has been over the last few days. Meadows picked up 13” of snow during the day on Thursday, and the new MHX lift (I call it “Beast Mode”) ran almost all day despite wind gusts into the 80’s. Another foot or so will fall Thursday night into Friday morning. Next up: big pattern change with much colder weather followed by (c’mon, Mother Nature, really?) an extended period of above-freezing temps. Hello, spring skiing. Sadly, models have backed way, way off on the amount of precipitation anticipated over the next few days. 4-8 feet would have been rad. We’ll have to settle with what we get, cuz hey, we have no choice! And you know what? We’re in a lot better shape than we were a couple weeks ago! PS. Meadows Nordic opens on Friday.

Friday will be another powder day. The snow level starts at 1000′ or less and drops to 0′ by the afternoon as an arctic cold front powers in from the east side. Expect temps to plummet during the day. Be prepared for very, very cold weather. Most of the snow will be done by the time lifts get started. As of tonight, there’s just 0.1” WE forecast in the morning, for an inch of new. Wind: W 35-40 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

Saturday probably starts out snowy, but there’s quite a bit of disagreement in the models on where the snow-maker will come ashore. If it’s too far south, we won’t get much snow at all on Mt. Hood. Either way… it’s going to very, very cold. Temps will potentially be below zero to start the day and won’t warm up much. As for snow, somewhere between a few inches and a foot are forecast, mostly during the day, but maybe continuing into the evening. Wind will be W 20 in the morning, WSW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 25-35 overnight.

Sunday looks clear and warmer. It’ll be much warmer on the mountain than in the Gorge and perhaps warmer than in the metro area! Temps start in the low 20’s and rise to the mid or upper 20’s. Sunshine sticks around all day. Wind: NW 25-35 in the morning, NW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NNW 15 overnight. Monday looks sunny with temps all over the place as the east side cold air battles with warm air on the west side. Tuesday: high overcast and above freezing in the afternoon. Wednesday: probably some light rain.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! How about some fun easterlies all through the Gorge? For Friday, expect 30-40 to start from Hood River to Boardman. That quickly fills in to Iwash (Rooster) Rock. By mid-morning, we should have 30-50 from Viento to Boardman with 60-70 at Iwash. Fun stuff! River flow on Thursday was 61-102kcfs, river temp is 43F, and high temp forecast for Friday is going to be somewhere sub-freezing.

Saturday sees the wind back off east of Swell to “light”. Stevenson: 40-50. Iwash Rock: 70. Temp: 10ish. Wind chill: -20F or so. Sunday brings 35-40 at Stevenson and 50-60 at Iwash. Nuking easterlies return for Monday and Tuesday. High temps: far below freezing.

Very icy roads and snow Thursday morning give way to partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. Temps will be, I dunno, upper 20’s early and will never rise above freezing. Very strong easterlies. No rainbows. Saturday will be partly cloudy and then snowy (maybe). Temps start in the single digits and might climb to the double digits. Light easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday will be partly cloudy. Temps start in the single digits and rise to the teens. Light easterlies. No rainbows.

Amayah’s Indian Cafe (Biggs) offers a free meal every first Thursday from 1-4pm.

Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
