Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Your Mt. Hood forecast summary for the next few days (today is Friday, by the way), looks like this: Mostly clear sky and warming temps through Monday afternoon followed by massive rainfall starting Monday night. Looking specifically at Friday, you can expect clear sky on the mountain. Temps are lagging far behind the models – as of 6am, it was still in the teens on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level will be at the surface today, but temps at 5000′ are forecast to rise into the upper 20’s to low 30’s. That will impact snow quality. Wind on Friday will be light and variable all day. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Saturday looks clear and sunny on the mountain. The free air freezing level will be 6000′ or so, and temps at 5000′ are forecast to rise into the low to mid 30’s. Wind on Saturday will be light and variable in the morning and S 10 in the afternoon as a very weak, and likely dry, weather system approaches the Northwest.
Sunday may start off with some lingering high clouds, but the sky should clear by mid-morning. The free air freezing level on Sunday will be around 5000′, with temps at 5000′ right at or just above 32 degrees. Wind on Sunday will be NW 15 in the morning and light and variable in the afternoon.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Monday starts out with a few high clouds and then turns dark, cloudy and oppressive on Monday afternoon. If you start to feel a sense of dread during the day on Monday, trust yourself. Rain starts up around 7pm on Mt. Hood, becoming very heavy by midnight. The snow level – are you ready? – will be somewhere between 9000′ and 11,000′ on Monday. The GFS model is currently predicting 1” of rain by 4am Tuesday, followed by 5” of rain by 4pm Tuesday and another 4” of rain by Wednesday morning.
No, you did not misread that. The GFS is predicting 12-13” of rain for Mt. Hood between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon. The Euro takes us out of the Pineapple Express bullseye a little earlier than the GFS does, but this is still going to be a massive rain event for both the mountain and the lowlands.
I think it’s worth mentioning that the avalanche danger will be extreme both on the mountain and in lowland areas that have received significant snowfall. Urban and river flooding will be a distinct possibility, so please start clearing your storm drains now. In addition, get the snow off your flat roof, carport, boat, etc.

Random Morning Thoughts
It’s a strange world we live in these days. Until recently, we humans lived more collectively. We were deeply connected with our neighbors and our communities. For some people, that is still true. For many others, it is not.
Here in the Gorge, where we have a significant snowpack on the ground and massive rainfall headed our way, now is the time to recreate those bonds. The incoming heavy rain will knock down snow-covered trees, collapse carports, sink boats, etc. Get out there and help your neighbors shovel. Work together to clear snow from storm drains.
This is your chance to create a lasting sense of community. I promise you this will feel just as good as a play day. Your heart will fill up, and that’s just as important as filling up your fun stash. Plus, the connections you make will last longer than a play day. Be well. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
It was 13 degrees outside my house this morning, and I almost assumed the sky was clear. Thank goodness I didn’t – the Nothing was overhead. Goodness… how cold would it be without the cloud cover? There are some minus temps around the region, so maybe that’s the answer. Anyway, expect temps to rise into the mid 20’s today. East wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks almost exactly the same as today. Sunday looks a touch warmer – models are suggesting high clouds overnight, for low 20’s in the morning and low 30’s in the afternoon. Maybe that high temp is a little too high? Monday looks tricky – models bring us above freezing in the afternoon before precip starts around 7pm. Let’s be skeptical of that and prepare for a round of freezing rain Monday night, okay?
