Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

In the wake of yesterday’s cold fronts, the wind is all over the place this morning. Give it a little while to settle down for the best results. Unless you’re up for chasing a couple hours of 10-15mph easterlies, Saturday is a rest day from the river. Westerlies return Sunday afternoon, just strong enough, and for just long enough that KB4C is likely to pull off the derby.

Let’s look at Friday. Scattered low clouds are lingering in the western Gorge. Gradients sit at .08 and .05 to start the day. It’s best to ignore that eastern Gorge wind/gradient unless you’re already there. Late morning wind steadies out at 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 to The Dalles and 7-10 east of there. Once the desert heats up, the wind builds to 20-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles (late in the day from Lyle to Doug’s) with 10-13 at Rufus and light westerlies at Arlington. River flow is 88,700cfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 73F for Hood River.

High pressure builds over the region on Saturday and a heat low pushes into the west side from California. We start with calm wind. Easterlies build to 10-15 from Stevenson to Viento for a couple hours mid-morning before fading back to 10mph or so and extending to Rooster. East of Viento, the wind will be essentially calm all day. High temp: 83F.

Sunday starts dead calm and perfectly clear. Nothing happens wind-wise in the morning. Around noon, the wind starts to build. By 2pm or so, it’ll be 10-13mph from Stevenson to Swell. From then on, it’s an upward climb to 20-23ish from Stevenson to The Dalles in the evening. See – enough to get that kite derby done. Looking deeper into the forecast, we have a tentative plan for 27-31 both Monday and Tuesday with 22-25 on Wednesday. After that, models have too much spread for guesses. Have a great day!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger. Columbia Hills is closed due to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon has reopened. Huffman: not sure.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
