What a fantastic start to the ski season for the folks at Mt. Hood Meadows – there’s nothing like an opening day with deep powder! Here’s your opening day weather: Expect high overcast sky this morning to give way to steady snowfall around 10am, with snowfall continuing through tomorrow morning. According to the sounding model…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Here’s your opening day weather: Expect high overcast sky this morning to give way to steady snowfall around 10am, with snowfall continuing through tomorrow morning. According to the sounding model forecast, the snow level today will be around 2500′ this morning and 1500′ this afternoon. The GFS calls for 4500′. Either way, we should see all snow, all day. You can expect .4” water value (WV) between 10am and 4pm, for 4” of new. Another .4-.5” WV falls tonight, for 5-6” of additional snow. Wind today will be SW 20 for much of the day, becoming W 20 overnight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off cloudy with heavy precipitation starting around 10am and continuing through Sunday morning. The snow level will be 2000′ early, and 5000′ in the afternoon, before dropping back to 3000′ in the evening. It’s possible, although unlikely, that there will be a period of mixed precip between 4pm and 7pm, so let’s all cross our fingers, because Meadows will be open for night skiing tomorrow night. Anyway, total precip between 10am and 4pm will be approximately 1” WV, for 7-10” of relatively dense new snow. Another 1-1.5” WV falls between 4pm Saturday and 4am Sunday, for another 8-14” of new. Wind on Saturday will be NW 15 early, SW 25 midday, SW 50 in the afternoon, and WSW 30 overnight.

Sunday starts out with fresh snow on the ground and a few lingering snow flurries in the air. That’ll be followed by a good chance of sunshine during the day and another round of new snow overnight. The snow level on Sunday will be 2500′ early and 1500′ in the afternoon, falling as low as 500′ after midnight. We’ll see .3” WV in the morning, for 2-4” of new, followed by sun midday and another round of snow after 4pm, for .6-.8” WV, giving us 7-9” of dry powder by Monday morning. Wind Sunday will be W 30-35 for much of the day with WNW 35-40 in the afternoon and evening. As of right now, Monday looks like an awesome day: cold with orographic flurries and sunbreaks.

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s a light easterly breeze this morning, and the easterlies will pick up a bit today, maxing out at 25-30 at Rooster this afternoon. Again, remember that there is a ton of debris in the Columbia right now, and it’s a dangerous proposition to be bashing around out there at high speed. Tomorrow starts off light and variable and turns to E 15-20 in the afternoon. Sunday starts with W 10-13 through pretty much the whole Gorge and picks up to W 16-19, briefly, early afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Sometimes I notice myself upset about a situation with another person, and instead of talking to that person, I talk to my friends about what is going on. We all do this – it’s natural to avoid difficult conversations, and it’s natural to want to receive support from others.

That said, I’ve noticed that I tend to talk about a situation, rather than confronting it head on, when it brings up unresolved past issues – when my buttons are pushed, in other words.

I have the belief that difficult conversations are relatively easy when they’re just about current issues. However, when they tap into our past, they become very, very difficult. Instead of feeling upset, we feel terrified. We go into an anxiety spiral about possible outcomes. Our thinking about the situation becomes rigid or chaotic, rather than flexible.

See if you can catch yourself doing this next time you’re upset about an interpersonal conflict and find yourself talking to friends, rather than the other party. See if your reaction to the situation is in proportion to the situation. If not, you might be tapping into your past. That’s good to know, because it can allow you to soothe yourself and approach the conversation with more equanimity.

In other words, if you can learn to be more aware of when a situation is pushing your buttons, you can approach life with more calm and a sense of inner peace. And hey, who doesn’t want more of those two things? Know yourself. Be awesome. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just wandered outside to look at the sky, and found myself quickly running back inside to the warmth. Brrr. My quick inspection revealed that there’s Nothing out there. That’s a big difference from yesterday’s amazing rainbow start! Expect a cloudy start to today with temps in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s this afternoon. Rain sprinkles start around 10am, and continue for the rest of the day. Light wind. 13% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts off mostly cloudy and dry. Steady rain starts around 10am and continues through Sunday morning. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 5% chance of rainbows. Sunday starts off showery and possibly clears up midday before another round of rain arrives in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind, 98% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a jog in Post Canyon yesterday, and was pleasantly surprised to see zero tire tracks on the trails. You people are being awesome about not riding when it’s muddy. Thank you for protecting our trail system! In other news… the gravel roads are still open for your gravel-grinding pleasure, and the spin bikes at the gym will keep you in shape. Coming up Sunday, 10am to 3pm, Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair work party at their storage shed behind Cascade Eye Center. Help fix up bikes that will be given to kids in need.

Upcoming Events

This morning is the Kickstand Coffee run. 7am, 4.1 miles, 1 free coffee and 1 free donut. There’s a trail run tomorrow morning at 8am in Post Canyon.

Coming up Sunday for you bike riders, it’s your chance to give back. Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair party from 10am to 3pm. You can stop by any time and give a hand – you don’t need technical skills. If you can wash a bike, you’re welcome. If you can change a flat tire, you’re welcome. If you have technical bike repair skills, you are also welcome. There will be snacks and hot cocoa and a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
