Friday. Nothing down low, sunshine up high!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Looks like we’re going to see a few beautiful days on the mountain, so if you’d like to see blue sky and sunshine, and possibly even wear a t-shirt, you might want to head to the hill. It’s Friday right now, and it’ll be a sunny day on the hill. There’s just a chance of a few scattered high clouds later in the day. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ early and 5500′ in the afternoon. The wind will be light all day, perhaps feeling a little breezier at W 10 in the afternoon. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Saturday also looks sunny, and it’ll be warmer. The free air freezing level will be 8000′ in the morning and 9000′ in the afternoon. Light and variable wind in the morning gives way to SW wind at 5-10 in the afternoon. Max temps at 5000′ on Saturday will be around 40 degrees.

If that’s not warm enough for you, you can head to the hill on Sunday. Clear sky in the morning gives way to clouds in the evening and wet snow or a rain/snow mix that switches to snow overnight. The snow level will be 9000′ early, dropping to 5000′ after midnight. We’re just going to see .1” of precip or so, for very little impact on the snowpack. Wind on Sunday will be SW 10 early, rising during the day to WSW 30 in the afternoon and falling to W 20 in the evening. Max temp on Sunday at 5000′ currently looks like 47 degrees. Whoa. We’ll see if that really pans out!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Looking at Monday, we may see a few scattered flurries in the morning. That’ll be followed by high clouds in the afternoon. The snow level will be 5000′ in the morning, dropping to 3000′ in the evening. The wind will be out of the W on Monday at 15-20mph. Next chance for additional snowfall is probably going to be Wednesday midday, but models are not exactly agreeing on timing, temp, or precip amounts.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m feeling super distracted this morning, in part because my neighbors dropped something heavy at 5:30 and woke me out of a sound sleep. I’m trying to think of something meaningful to say about that, but it just is what it is.

Life just sorta happens, right? We have some measure of control over how we act, but we can’t control other people, we can’t control the weather, and we can’t even control our bodies (although we can gain some measure of control over our minds).

There are two helpful takeaways from this: first, if we stop telling ourselves stories about what’s happening, we’ll lower our stress level. Saying, “These things always happen to me, so I must be…” just makes you feel crappy. Unfortunately, these things just happen sometimes.

Second, when we stop telling stories, we can just be with what’s happening. By simply watching our experience, the experience is more likely to move through us, allowing us to shift into a different state of being. This is easier said than done sometimes, especially when we’re talking about deep emotional or physical pain, but with practice, our capacity to tolerate distress wisely will grow.

In essence, it’s important to be kind with ourselves as we go through life. It’s important to understand that life is happening all around us, and our control of events is somewhat limited. Pleasant things will happen. Unpleasant things will happen. It’s all fascinating, complex, and awe-inspiring, even when it’s hard. Whatever you’re going through today, I wish you the best. Be well. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The Nothing is here for the next several days, so you can expect exactly this for the next three days: Nothing in the morning, partly cloudy sky by afternoon, a few scattered snowflakes or raindrops, and temps in the upper 20’s to low 30’s early and the mid to upper 30’s in the afternoon. East wind until Sunday afternoon, when we may see some light westerlies and a bonus round of sunshine. Additional snowflakes may fall on Sunday night, but not enough to make a bit impact on anyone’s life. Next chance for a complete disaster in the Gorge is late Wednesday night.

Upcoming Events

We’ve already missed today’s 7am Kickstand run, where 4.1 miles of jogging gets you a cup of coffee and a donut. There are a few fun things tomorrow: Community yoga in Spanish at 7am at Flow, a trail run in Post at 8am, and the taking-place-in-the-shop Cold Lap (renamed the “Cold Beer”) at 3pm at Dirty Fingers. Mark your calendar for next Friday evening for a snow safety fundraiser for Crag Rats and NWAC. That’s at Kickstand Coffee.

Have an awesome day today!
