Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! I missed you over the last week while I was on retreat! My next one isn’t until December, so let’s cross our fingers for a windy fall. I’ll be here for you every day that I’m not called out in the middle of the night on crisis. “Windy” doesn’t describe the next couple of days, but you should have a chance on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday before we head back into warmer weather and (probably) lesser wind for the second half of next week.

Friday opens up with pressures of 30.10/30.04/30.03 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.01. Clearly we’re not heading east today! The question to ask is… Will there be enough wind in the Corridor? Answer: probably not unless you rush over to Viento for the marginal Dawn Patrol. Westerlies will be 15mph or so there this morning and may make a brief, limited appearance at Swell at 12-15mph for a couple hours this morning. Models then drive gradients and wind down by late morning. You’ll find 10-13 (maybe) at Stevenson and Viento with less than 10mph from Swell to Hood River and calm conditions to the east. Thanks a lot, sunshine and warmth. Rumor has it that the Armstrong foil crew has a flat water paddle meetup at the Boat Basin at 10:30. That’s a rumor, but let’s all go check it out. River flow Thursday was 58-98kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 79F.

Saturday sees warm weather all the way from the metro area to the desert. Very light east flow through the entire Gorge in the morning gives way to very light west flow in the afternoon. You might find W 10-13 near Stevenson from mid-afternoon on, but you probably won’t. High temp: 85F.

A weak cold front approaches on Sunday. That should give a nudge upward to the wind by keeping the west side a little cooler. The desert looks hot, or at least hot enough. Worth noting: models are not fully in agreement on this. That said… Viento to Mosier start with 13-16. Midday: 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Models like the idea of 20-23 from Hood River to The Dalles in the late afternoon with 14-17 west of Hood River. Avery may rise to 13-16, but locations deeper into the desert will stay calm or light. High temp: 82F.

Models are in better agreement on westerlies for Monday and Tuesday. Let me clarify – they’re in better agreement that there will be wind, but they’re not agreeing on how much wind. Monday afternoon should reach the mid 20’s. Tuesday morning will probably be similar, but Tuesday afternoon may fade. Starting Wednesday, model disagreement increases. That said, models are in agreement on ridging. This time of year, that often means easterlies, but can also mean calm conditions. It’s unlikely to result in westerlies. So, go ahead and plan out your week! Have a lovely Friday!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdee, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. What will it take to open these lands? The END of fire season. Not one rainfall. Multiple heavy rainfalls. Please be patient. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
