Friday: nice-looking weekend coming up!

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Clouds and flurries for Friday give way to clear sky Saturday, clouds on Sunday and Monday, and rain Monday afternoon. The long range forecast contains some temperature uncertainty, but the general picture looks warm and wet. I recommend getting up there and riding now before spring really sets in its hooks! Before I forget, today is Ski for Sunshine at Skibowl – donate 10 cans of food and you ski for free.

Friday starts with flurries, and they continue all day. The sky will clear after midnight. The snow level will be 4000′ during the day and 4500′ overnight. Just a trace of new snow will fall in the 24 hour period. Wind will be variable to 10mph becoming NW 15 after midnight.

Saturday looks sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4500′ early, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: NW 15 early, W 5 in the afternoon, SW 10 overnight. Sunday looks cloudy. The FAF will be 6000′ for the 24 hour period. Wind will be SW 10 early, slowly fading to light SW overnight. Sunday is the Nordic Extravaganza at Meadows – music, racing, and of course, skating!

Monday starts out cloudy. Precip, most likely as rain, moves in around 5pm. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning and 7000′ in the afternoon. Just a trace of rain will fall overnight. Wind will be SW 5-10 all day. Tuesday starts out with rain. The GFS turns that to snow by Tuesday night, but the Euro is less optimistic; it predicts rain Tuesday night into Wednesday. After that, the longer-range forecast keeps temps above freezing on the mountain with intermittent periods of moderate rain. So, get it now while it’s good!

Gorge Wind

There’s not much to talk about in the wind for the next week or so, but it’s still good to know what’s up, right? For Friday, we’ll have light and variable wind all day. River flow is 168kcfs and temp is 43 degrees. Saturday starts out with light westerlies, goes calm, and ends with light easterlies. Sunday starts with E 15-20 near Rooster, goes calm midday, and turns to light westerly in the afternoon. Widespread easterlies look likely on Monday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Syncline and Columbia Hills remain your only Gorge options for mountain biking at this time. In road biking news, State Road, Mosier to The Dalles, and Sevenmile have been swept of gravel. The grass widows are blooming, but there’s no sign of Balsam Root yet. This week’s Cold Lap on Saturday involves biathlon – shooting and biking. What more could you want?

Upcoming Events

Happy Friday. The Kickstand Coffee Run is at 7am at, duh, Kickstand Coffee. There’s a by-donation yoga class at 4:15 at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Today is Ski for Sunshine at Skibowl – donate 10 cans of food and ski without buying a lift ticket. Coming up this weekend, there’s a work party at the Nichols Boat Basin Natural Area at 9am. The first swap meet of the season is Saturday morning, 7am to noon at Luhr Jensen parking lot in Hood River. Mt. Hood Meadows has the Nordic Extravaganza on Sunday. As mentioned in the biking section, the Cold Lap at Dirty Fingers (3pm Saturday) is a biathlon.
