Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s a cloudy start to the day on Mt. Hood, and it’ll be snowy before you know it. The snow level will be near the surface in the Mt. Hood area, with temps on the hill rising to the upper 20’s by this afternoon. Approximately .3-.5” water value (WV) will fall today (the incoming moisture looks further west than models, and also shorter-lasting), for 2-4” of wet new snow by 4pm. Flurries continue tonight, but there won’t be much accumulation. Wind today will be S 20 early, SW 15-20 midday, and SW 10 after sunset. Continued after the chart…

Saturday starts off with a quick shot of snow, then flurries, then clear sky overnight. The snow level will be at the surface early, rising to 4000′ in the evening, and dropping back down near the surface overnight. We’ll see .3” WV between 4am and 4pm, for 2-3” of new snow. Widn Saturday will be SW 15 early, rising to WSW 35 in the afternoon, and falling to SW 15 late in the evening.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Sunday also starts off with a quick shot of snow. The sun pops out from among the cloudy late in the morning through early afternoon, and then snow flurries return overnight. Sunday’s snow level will be less than 500′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and back near the surface after sunset. Around .3-.4” WV falls between 4am and 10am, for 3-4” of new snow. Wind on Sunday will be SSW 20 early, fading to SW 10 after mid-morning.
Monday brings a few flurries during the day and partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. The snow level will be at the surface, and the wind will be light. The rest of the week, Tuesday through Friday, currently looks dry and sunny.
Gorge Wind Forecast
For once, reality is running behind the models on wind. Or maybe the sensors are still moving slowly. Anyway, expect E 35-40 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock this morning and all day long. Saturday brings E 25-30 early, E 35-40 midday, and E 10-15 in the afternoon. Sunday looks like E 40-50 in the morning and E 20-25 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts
For the last several weeks, for various reasons, I’ve been disconnected from the news cycle. Now that it’s inauguration day, I find myself drawn back in. As you may have intuited from other things I’ve said, I believe in a social safety net.
Many of us have friends, partners, and families who are happy to step in and help us when times get tough. We find it hard to comprehend that other people could have a different experience. Unfortunately, there are many people who have no friends, no partner, no community and no family to help them out. This sort of isolation can make it difficult to survive, let alone thrive.
In essence, for isolated folks, the government becomes a family of last resort. Social services function as a temporary family, helping people find a family of choice if that’s possible. One fear I have going forward is that we will slide further into an us-them paradigm, that we will cast out from the American family those who have no family of their own. Let us not forget those who are less fortunate than us. Be awesome. Be well. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s right near freezing in the Gorge this morning, meaning we’re going to see snow-not-rain today. Between this morning and 4pm, we’ll have 2-3” in the western Gorge and 1-2” from Viento to The Dalles. Another 1-3” everywhere falls between 4pm today and 4am Saturday. East wind. No rainbows. Saturday starts with temps in the upper 20’s and may, maybe rise to just above freezing, but probably not warm enough for rain-not-snow. We’ll see a round of precip from 10am to 5pm: 2-4” snow near Cascade Locks, 1-2” near Hood River, and less than 2” in The Dalles. East wind. No rainbows.
Sunday brings temps just under freezing overnight and just above freezing during the day. A round of precip between 3am and 9am brings 2-3” of snow to the CL area, 2-3” to the HR area, and 1-2” near TD. Folks higher up than river level will see an inch or so more in all these systems. It still looks like there’s a chance of an inch or so of wet snow in the metro area on Monday morning, but it’s definitely not a slam dunk forecast.
