Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! I’m off to retreat through next Wednesday, so I’ll see you for the next forecast next Thursday. In between now and then, models are pretty clear you’ll have wind. Before I forget, models are also clear that the first swap meet of the season is Sunday at Lot 1 on the Hood River waterfront. Quick overview: strongest wind will be Tuesday, followed by Friday and Saturday. Sunday looks too light to ride. Other than that, there should be wind every day I’m gone.

For Friday, we have a cold front that’s approaching this afternoon – you can already see some effects of the associated incoming low in the high clouds that started the day. That cold front will keep the west side chilly and allow the desert to heat. The late day session will be strongest. We started with pressures of 29.96/29.90/29.86 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.04. Dawn Patrol wind was 10ish mph all through the Gorge. Westerlies quickly build to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 14-17 from Lyle to Rufus by mid to late morning. A surface heat low develops in the desert this afternoon as cold air flows into the metro area on the west side. The wind holds at 20-23 west of Lyle and rises to 27-31 from Lyle to Arlington (probably very gusty for the Rufus stretch). For the executive, after 5pm, session, westerlies drop to 10-13 or less west of The Dalles thanks to incoming drizzle, and the wind holds at 27-31 from Avery to Boardman. River flow over the last 24 hours was 198-254kcfs, river temp is 58.28F, and high temp forecast is 65F under partly cloudy sky.

Saturday sees low clouds hang out all day long in Hood River. They’ll break up some in the afternoon, but their presence will make for gusty wind west of the sunshine. The day starts with 7-10 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 22-25 from Avery to Arlington. Midday wind rises to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier and 24-27 from Lyle to Boardman. Afternoon: still in the teens in the west with 28-32 from Lyle to Boardman. After 5pm, the wind fades to the mid 20’s out east. High temp for Hood River: 59F and mostly cloudy. Arlington: 62F and sunny. High pressure builds inland on Sunday. As of this morning, it looks like there could be a short burst of 10-13 Dawn Patrol from Viento to Swell before the wind drops to 10mph or less and stays there. High temp: 71F.

Extended (when things get fuzzy): A slow, perhaps calm, start on Monday is aided by an increasing thermal gradient. Westerlies gradually build to 20ish from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon bump up to 24-27 from Stevenson to Avery for the evening Executive Session. On Tuesday, models set up a giant cross-Cascade thermal gradient for 30-35+, strongest out east, but plenty strong near Hood River too. There’s a little less agreement about Wednesday, but it too should top out in the mid-20s. That’s all for now. I will see you next Thursday, when I’ll hopefully be calm, well-rested, and ready for summer!
