Mt. Hood Forecast
An interesting weather setup up Friday has warmer temps above (21 at the top of Cascade) and colder temps below (10 at the base of Meadows). This will return to “normal” on Saturday, which should improve snow quality. Generally speaking, a shit-ton of snow will fall between now and Tuesday.
Looking at Friday, we have snow all day and all night. The snow level will be 0′, but temps up high will be -6C in the morning and just -3C in the afternoon. That will make for relatively heavy snow given the lowland temps. Expect 0.4” water equivalent (WE) during the day, for 4-5” of new snow. Another 1.1” WE is forecast overnight for 10-12” of relatively dense snow given the overall weather picture. Wind: SW 15-25 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SW 15-30 overnight. Bundle up: wind chill temps will be frigid.
Temps drop all day Saturday, and lots of snow falls with the snow level at 0′. By the end of the day, it’ll be champagne powder. Temps will initially be -5C at 7000′ and will fall to -10C at all elevations. About 1.1” WE is forecast during the day, for 12-14” of fluffy powder. Another 0.2” WE is in the cards overnight, for 2-3” of dry, light, fluffy snow. Wind: SW 15-30 during the day, WNW 30-35 in the evening (free powder refills!), and W 20-25 after midnight.
Just a trace of snow falls on sunday daytime, but the snow picks up overnight. Some sun is possible during the day before clouds increase in the afternoon. The snow level will be 0-1500′. Just a trace falls during the day. About 0.7” WE is forecast overnight with some odd temperature combos that could lead to the snow being rather dense. Let’s call it 6-8” new. Wind: W 20 early, WSW 10-15 midday, SW 5-10 in the evening, and SW 10-25 overnight.
The storm really builds on Monday as westerlies and north-westerlies amp up the orographics. The snow level will be about 1000′ early and will rise to 4000′ in the afternoon and fall to 2500-3000′ overnight. That’s an effective snow level based on upper air temps, and more an indicator of snow quality than actual snow level in many places. Anyway, about 1.5” WE is forecast during the day, for 14-16” of dense new snow. A period of freezing rain or sleet or weird weather is not out of the question in the morning. Another 1.4” WE is forecast overnight. All snow, and increasing in quality. 14-16” of new. Wind: SW 10-25 early building to W 55 in the evening (impacting lifts) and NW 45-50 overnight (impacting snow quality and causing extreme avalanche hazard). Heavy snow and blizzard conditions for excellent storm skiing continue on Tuesday.
Notes: dress for very cold weather. Bring a shovel so you can extricate your car from the parking lots. Ride with avalanche safety gear if you have it. Avoid tree wells. Ride with a buddy. Enjoy!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
We are in winter riding season, and the trails are apt to be fragile. If it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. If it was below freezing last night and it is sunny now, don’t ride unless you are under a tree canopy for the entire ride. Freeze-thaw conditions, when ridden upon, result in permanent trail damage. Please consider doing something else, perhaps riding a gravel road in the trees or going to the mountain. Thank you!
