Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Mt. Hood Forecast

Cloudy weather on the mountain this morning (it’s Friday, TG) gives way to light to moderate snowfall and then flurries. For the weekend, we’re looking at mostly cloudy weather with light snowfall and some scattered sunbreaks. Not much changes as we head into the start of next week. It’s worth mentioning that the third Strava race is on at Meadows Nordic. You can join their Strava Club for all the details.

As for the weather details for Friday, clouds gradually lower until snow falls from them. The snow level will initially be 5500, per-precipitation, but it will fall all day until it lands at about 2000′ overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 2-3” of new. Just a trace is forecast tonight. Wind: SW 25-55 in the morning, SW 20-40 in the afternoon, and W 30 overnight.

Flurries are possible all day Saturday, and about an inch of snow is in the forecast overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 2500-3000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Wind: W 30 early, W 15 mid-morning, SW 5-15 in the afternoon building to SW 20-45 overnight.

On to Sunday, when we have a snowy morning and a clear-sky afternoon, most likely. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for 2-3” new snow. The weather looks dry overnight – clear at first, and then cloudy. Wind: SW 20-35 in the morning, SW 5-15 in the afternoon, and E 20-30 overnight.

Monday and Tuesday look cloudy with light snowfall possible. Nothing too exciting in the forecast, but the groom should remain good thanks to cool temps and just-enough snowfall this weekend. Enjoy!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies this morning at 10-20 from Rooster to Viento go calm quickly. Light westerlies pick up in the western Gorge around noon, perhaps 7-11 or so. From Avery to Arlington, there will be very gusty 22-28 from about 2pm to about 5pm. River flow is 148kcfs, river temp is 41F, and high temp forecast is 54F. Saturday’s wind looks like W 5-10 in the west all day. From The Dalles eastward, you’ll find 5-10 in the morning and 14-17 after 1pm. High temp: 51. Sunday starts with very light westerlies. Western Gorge wind holds in the W 5-10 range (with drizzle in the morning). For most of the morning, and perhaps the early afternoon, you’ll find 14-17 east of The Dalles. That drops off to 10-13 in the afternoon. High temp: 49F.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

Cycling

Strava reports suggest that lower Post Canyon, Hospital Hill, and Syncline are all in excellent shape. That gives you the option to check out Nestor Peak and Whoopdee as well – Douglas Johnson did some amazing work out there creating a new, improved Whoopdee. Remember: if it was below freezing last night and above freezing now, don’t ride trails exposed to the open air. They’ll be freeze-thaw and delicate, and you’ll destroy the tread. If you accidently do ride in those conditions, consider making a commitment to 20 hours of trail work this spring to make up for the damage.
