Friday. It’s going to be a wet weekend…

DSC_5401-Edit
It’s cloudy on Mt. Hood this morning which is as good a start as any, I suppose. We’ll see some light precip move in during the afternoon with a break overnight. The snow level today will be 6500′ early, dropping to 6000′ when the precip hits and 3000′ overnight. We’re going to receive .1-.2” water value (WV) between 1pm and 4pm, and that’s likely to fall as rain or mixed precip. Let’s call it less than 1” of snow at 5000′. We’ll also see a few flurries after midnight. Wind today will be SW 20 pretty much all day, picking up just a touch after 4pm, and turning to WSW 25 after 7pm. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Saturday sees a few orographic snow flurries mixed with sunbreaks in the morning. Moderate to heavy precip moves in after noon. We’ll see the snow level around 3500′ in the morning, rising to 5500′ by pm and 8000′ overnight. We’ll see .4”-.5” WV before the snow level rises, giving us 3-5” of rather heavy new snow. After that, we’ll see 1.5” of rain by 4am Sunday. Wind Saturday will be W 25-30 all morning, rising to W 45 around 7pm and W 55 overnight.

Sunday starts off warm, wet and windy, with orographic (terrain-enhanced) rainfall. And guess what? It’ll stay that way all day! The snow level Sunday will be 10,000′ in the morning, 7500′ mid-morning, and 9000′ overnight. We’ll see 1” of rain during the day, becoming heavy in the afternoon, followed by another .6” rain in the evening, ending after 7pm. Wind on Sunday will be enough to mess with the chairlifts, causing reduced speeds: WNW 50 right off the bat, dropping to W 40 mid-morning, and picking back up to W 45-50 in the afternoon and WNW 50-55 in the evening.

Monday looks clear, warm and windy, with the free air freezing level around 9000′ and WNW wind at 40-45 in the morning, slowly dropping to W 35 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m late getting the forecast out this morning because of two things: one, I slept in. Second, I was watching my cat play with my Five Ten mountain biking shoe. Cutest cat ever playing with best mountain biking shoe ever. What’s not to like about that? Anyway, I slept awesome last night, after about a week of not sleeping awesome at all. The difference? I went to my therapist yesterday, and I said, “I’m not sleeping. We gotta fix this.” He said, “Well, it’s not really my specialty, but…” I said, “It’s trauma-related, you got this…” We worked through some stuff, and I slept. Magic.

Anyway, trauma can be anything that overwhelms your nervous system. If you process it in the moment (and that can look like a lot of things – basically, responding in some way, rather than freezing) you’re going to be okay, and it’s most likely not going to impact you long term. If you don’t or can’t process what’s happening, your body will store the impact. This isn’t woo-woo psychobabble. This is just the way things work.

So, the next time something overwhelming or shocking happens to you (a cop pulls you over, you crash your bike, you have an interaction that leaves you shaky), create some space to let your body react. Maybe you’ll shake. Maybe you’ll run. Maybe you’ll rant and scream (not at the cop, though). Just let yourself have whatever reaction your body has (but not freezing – do something!). Don’t push down your reaction; let it run its course, and then get on with your day. You’ll find yourself happier, healthier, and less anxious. Oh, and you’ll be more awesome, of course. Have an awesome day.

Light east wind early, light west wind later. 46% chance of rainbows.

Light west wind. 87% chance of rainbows, especially east of Hood River. Sunday looks very rainy all day long. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Road and Mountain Biking

It hasn’t been raining yet today, and we received .16” of rain yesterday. That shouldn’t be enough to muck up the trails, although you may find Post a little bit slick, and you may find the rocks on Syncline a bit slick. That said, you’ll want to ride now or tomorrow morning, because there’s lots of rain coming tomorrow afternoon.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and since I got up so late, all of us missed the Friday morning Kickstand Coffee run. That means we won’t be earning a free coffee and donut for jogging 4.1 miles. Our loss. Today is the Fat Bike Festival at Mt. Hood Meadows. Free fat bike demos from 11-3. Meadows has a free avalanche awareness clinic tomorrow in the main lodge. I think it’s at 1pm, but you’ll want to double-check with them. There’s a trail run tomorrow morning at 8am in Post Canyon. Tomorrow is the last Cold Lap ride of the season, leaving Dirty Fingers at 3pm. Apparently it includes some Biathlon tomorrow, so be prepared to shoot.

Have an awesome day today!
