Gorge Wind Forecast

Before we jump into the wind forecast today, I’d like to ask you to help some readers of this forecast. Ellene and Glenn Yorks lost everything in one of the southern Oregon fires. If you take three minutes right now to donate $10 or more to the GoFundMe for them, it’ll be fully funded this morning, and you’ll feel awesome for having done a good deed!

Air quality improved overnight. It’s not great, but it’s better. Does that mean you should be on the river? Well, I still feel the smoke tickling my lungs, so maybe not? Anyway, we’ll see a short burst of westerlies midday today as the weather system causing all the chaos (thunder, lightning, tornado vortex signature) in the west shifts inland. Expect westerlies sat 13-16 from Viento to Swell early with 0-5 everywhere else. As this system moves in, westerlies drop to 8-11 in the west. We’ll see a short burst of gusty 21-26 first in the west, then central, then eastern Gorge. River flow is 96,100cfs, temp is 66, and high temp today will be about 69 degrees.

Saturday starts with west wind at 7-10 all through the Gorge. Showers fall west of Underwood most of the day. That keeps the western Gorge wind at 10-13 or so. From Mosier to Arlington, the wind picks up to 19-23 in the afternoon. High temp: 70. Sunday: light and variable early with westerlies at 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood river in the afternoon. High temp: 74.

The Port of Hood River is offering up the Event Site, Lot 1, and the Marina parking for wildfire evacuees. I’m not sure how many people are taking advantage of that, but perhaps you can take them food and n95 masks. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

Coast (north/central/south, waves. Direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Friday: LTSW/LTSW/S10-15, SW swell 4′ at 13 seconds. Saturday: W5/LTV/N15-20, SW 3′ @ 17. Sunday: 10-15/15-20/20-25+, SW 3′ @ 16. Jones Friday: LTW. Saturday: LTW. Sunday: 7-10. Sauvie’s Friday-Sunday: light.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Air quality improves today, but the sky will be cloudy above the smoke. Chance of thunderstorms midday along with scattered showers. Temps will be in the mid 60’s in the morning and upper 60’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Saturday will be cloudy above the smoke, but the smoke will continue to lessen. Scattered showers fall during the day. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 70’s later. Light westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday looks cloudy in the morning and clear in the afternoon. Will we see blue or bluish sky? With upper flow westerly, I’m thinking we will! Temps will be in the mid 50’s in the morning and mid 70’s later. Light westerlies. No rainbows.     Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast?
