Friday. If you’re looking for wind, we got it here. Come for a visit for the holiday weekend!

DSC_9388-Edit-Edit
It might not look all that windy out there, but trust me, it is. Not only is it windy, but today’s setup is a good one: Offshore high pressure, a trough along the coast, low pressure in the desert, and nothing moving around. The only thing that’s not ideal is the cause of the desert low, but hey, we can’t be all that picky, right? Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Gradients at 6am sat at .14 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc), and that’s just the start. Expect the wind to build to 28-32 midday from Swell to Rufus, with 24-28 at Steven’s Locks and a late evening build into the low 30’s at Arlington. Today’s only caveat is that thunderstorms may develop in the desert this afternoon, so you’re most likely to find steady, reliable, strong wind from Stevenson to The Dalles.

Tomorrow’s setup also looks nearly ideal. Expect Dawn Patrol from Swell to Arlington (or perhaps Mosier to Arlington if the marine layer really pushes in) at 24-28+ depending on the location. The wind will rise to 28-32 nearly everywhere tomorrow, with periods of 30-35 possible, likely, and almost certain.

Models are in a bit of disagreement over Sunday, according to NOAA. I don’t have access to the Euro for surface wind speeds, but the GFS is calling for 28-32. NOAA says the Euro is calling for stronger onshore flow, so it looks like the models are in agreement that Sunday will be rather windy. The GFS says 24-28 on Monday. In other words, it looks like you could easily get on the water and wear yourself out over the holiday weekend. If you’re elsewhere, come to the Gorge!

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was texting my therapist this morning (and this time I wasn’t walking at the same time, so I didn’t end up with seven stitches in my foot), and that got me thinking. I’m always so touched when a professional takes the time to text me. From my end, it’s huge. And I feel that even though I know a short text takes only a few seconds to send.

And that’s got me thinking about how we connect with each other (imagine that – me thinking about connection). I get lots of texts asking me to clean houses, texts about weather and wind, invites for bike rides – you know, practical texts. But here’s what I really like: I have one friend who randomly texts me hearts and hugs. I have another friend who randomly texts me the poop emoji. I love receiving these texts, because they say, “I’m thinking about you.” And that feels huge, and impacts me for far longer than it takes my friend to send the text.

So, today’s encouragement is to reach out and send little affectionate texts to your friends. Call them love nudges. Because the 30 seconds you spend on that text will warm your friend’s heart for hours. And the more we use that love pathway in our minds (and bodies, because neurons live there too), the more likely it is that the happy love pathway will run on a regular basis. “Reach out and touch someone” – it’s real, not just AT&T. Do it today.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Once again, it’s a cloudy start to the day. Leftover convective debris is turning the blue sky gray and making it look less windy on the river than it really is. We’ll likely see the cloudiness dissipate midday and return later, with a chance of thunderstorms, especially east of The Dalles. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and low 60’s this afternoon. It will be muggy, there will be strong wind, and there won’t be rainbows.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Nuking wind, no rainbows. Sunday looks mostly clear. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Nuking wind, no rainbows. Repeat Monday, with just a little less wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

The big event in bike news is the Anson’s Bike Buddieswrenching party at Cascade Eye Center tonight. ABB is a local charity started by a eight year old boy named Anson; his dream is that every kid should have a bike. If you have a used bike, you can drop it off (see the website for details) and ABB will find it a new home. And now we come to the repair party – old bikes need love, and if you can fix bikes, be at Cascade Eye Center in HR tonight from 5pm to 8pm to help out. In trail news, there is no new news, and in road biking news, it’s going to be mighty windy for the next several days.

The weekend forecast looks winday, and that’s great news for everyone, but most of all for kiters. Come to the Gorge and take advantage of a big sale and a kiter-only swap meet at Windance. You want to play all day, not shop, right? This swap’s in the evening: Saturday, 5pm-8pm, at Windance. Music by Spruce, BYOB. $10 for sellers, free for buyers. And if you don’t find what you need at the swap, shop: 20% off 2015 Slingshot Rallys, directions, and most twin-tips. Everything you need, one place. Windance.

Upcoming Events

Every Friday morning at 7am, and today is no exception, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, leaving 13th and State in Hood River for a 4 mile run followed by free coffee and donuts. Today at 2, CGWA has a ribbon-cutting party for the new launch at the Hook. Later this afternoon, the local charity Anson’s Bike Buddies has a bike repair party at Cascade Eye Center in Hood River. If you haven’t heard about these guys yet, they take your used bikes, fix them up, and give them to kids who don’t have bikes. I think that’s pretty cool.

Coming up tomorrow, Sunday and Monday, Skibowl is offering free admission to the Adventure Park for all members of the military. Tomorrow’s also a car wash at Dirty Fingers bike shop from 11 to 4 benefiting our local women’s mountain biking team, the Dirty Harlots. Tomorrow night there’s a kiteboarding swap meet at Windance from 5pm to 8pm. The swap is BYOB, and Spruce will be playing music, so even if you’re not a kiter, it might be a fun place to hang out.

Have an awesome day today!
