Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! I missed you, and I missed the river. I’m happy you had a couple big west wind days while I was on retreat. Looks like we have quite a flurry of action coming starting maybe tomorrow and definitely Sunday – westerlies of some sort will probably continue through next week as cooler weather arrives for the PNW. Today, however, looks hot and unexciting, wind-wise. I should mention that instability is in the picture for Sunday and Monday. That could impact wind quality and reliability.

Friday starts with pressures of 29.96/30.04/30.05. That’ll be enough for east wind at 17-20 at Stevenson and Viento and Iwash for a few hours this morning. By late morning or early afternoon at the latest, Stevenson and Viento drop to E 10ish, The Dalles and areas to the east rise to E 7-10, and Iwash turns light westerly or calm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 63-153kcfs, river temp is 70.16F, and high temp forecast is 99F. HOT!

The heat low causing those unreasonably hot temps on Friday shifts east of the Cascades on Saturday. This turns the wind westerly; the day starts with 10-13 from Viento to Swell with calm wind to the east and light west wind at Stevenson. The wind holds in the “not-enough” zone for the morning. Models suggest we’ll see more in the afternoon. The Stevenson-Mosier stretch rises to 14-17mph. Out east, an incoming low fires up some strong easterlies near The Dalles with lesser easterlies east to Arlington. We’ll also have widespread instability and a slight chance of thunderstorms. If those materialize, all bets are off on the forecast. High temp: down a bit to the upper 90’s, but potentially less if it’s cloudier than expected thanks to instability.

Much cooler air slips into the west side on Sunday, and the heat low lingers in the desert. High pressure offshore is joined by a trough moving towards the west coast. TJ’s dawn patrol should be 23-26 from Viento to Mosier. From Lyle to Arlington, the day starts with 15-18, as does Stevenson, which may be cloudy to start. By mid-morning, Viento-Hood River rises to 25-28, and areas to the east start building too. Early afternoon sees 26-29 from Viento to Rufus with 23-26 at Stevenson and 22-25 at Arlington. Sometime around then, Stevenson-Hood River drops to 20-23, and areas to the east hold. It’s possible we’ll see readings of 28-31 from Rufus to Arlington; remember that those sensors read high compared to Swell, so that’s approximately equivalent to 20-25 at Swell, depending on direction. High temp: 87F with quite a bit of instability. Speaking of – all that comes before this is moot if thunderstorms develop.

Extended: we start to see some spread in the models early next week, but the general picture is heat in the desert and cooler air on the west side. It looks like Monday’s focus will be near Hood River early and out east in the afternoon. Models hint at the strongest wind shifting east for Tuesday and Wednesday. Generally speaking, we’ll have plenty of wind for at least the first half of next week. In addition, high temps should be down around 80 or less. That’s it for now. Stay cool out there today!
