Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Despite the drizzle and clouds this morning, we’re on the brink of a warmer, drier, less-windy stretch of weather through the holiday weekend. We’ll even see some easterlies, which gives this forecaster the chance to take tomorrow off; I’m on crisis call, and there’s a good chance I won’t have the time to forecast on Saturday. So…

Let’s look at Friday. Lingering marine clouds and drizzle in the western Gorge this morning combines with sunshine in the desert. Gradients have dropped to .05 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc), and they will continue to drop today despite thermal gradients. Why? High pressure builds inland. This also knocks down the synoptic-scale assist factor. Westerlies start at 5-15 most places with lingering 20ish at Viento and Rufus. For a few hours this morning, areas from Rufus eastward will see 18-21. Don’t be drawn eastward; the wind will drop to 5-10 east of The Dalles this afternoon. From Stevenson to The Dalles, the wind maxes out at 13-16. River flow is 205kcfs, river temp is 56F, and high temp forecast is 69F.

High pressure builds inland and a thermal trough moves northward from California into western Cascadia. Easterlies respond with a morning push at 20-25 from Rooster to Viento. Afternoon wind drops to 10-13 from Rooster to Cascade Locks with 5-10 at Viento and calm, glassy conditions east of there.

Sunday morning is the first swap meet in two years. It’s happening at Lot 1 on the Hood River Waterfront. While you’re there, take the time to join CGW2 and support your windsport advocacy group. It’s a perfect day for a swap. Calm conditions stick around most of the day. A weak thermal gradient in the evening brings the westerlies up to 12-15 from Stevenson to Swell, maybe Hood River, with 7-11 from Bingen to Doug’s. If we look longer range, we see cooler air pushing into the west side Wednesday evening for a good shot at a blasting executive session. Thursday looks like our first Corridor nuke session of the year. Fingers crossed!
