Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! How do you feel about getting back on the river today? Excited? Yeah, me too! It was way too hot and muggy yesterday, and today started out too hot and muggy. Let’s get wet! Starting today, we have a long string of “strong-enough” west wind for many sports – not enough for windsurfers wanting nuking conditions, but enough for most of you. Before I forget, I know many of you like to mountain bike as well. Most trails in Post Canyon are closed so fire crews can conduct lines. You’ll want to check in with HRATS on what’s open/closed. K, back to wind…

Friday kicks off with pressures of 30.10/29.99/29.99. That’s 0.11 PDX-DLS and says “Corridor” to start. A system approaches and nudges the wind east later. It also fires off some instability along the Cascade Crest, which could do anything or nothing to the wind. We start with 20-23 from Viento to Swell with 13-16 from Hood river to Mosier, 10-13 near Rowena, and light/variable wind out east. We’ll see the wind rise to 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier this morning and fill in at 14-17 from Lyle to Rufus by late morning or early afternoon. A nudge from a system heading north offshore knocks Swell down to gusty 16-19 early afternoon. Stevenson and Mosier and maybe Hood River hold. Between Rowena and Rufus, barring thunderstorms, westerlies pick up to gusty 24-27 on the iWind sensors. Caveat: sensors east of Doug’s read high compared to the Swell sensor. River flow over the last 24 hours was 83 (morning) to 205kcfs (evening). River temp is 71.24F. High temp forecast is 92F and muggy for Hood river and 99F and muggy out east.

Saturday starts with kick-ass dawn patrol: 23-26 from Viento to Mosier with 14-17 east to Rufus and 10-13 at Arlington. Instability will be present, especially east of the Cascades, and this is going to mess with wind quality and reliability. That said, models knock the wind down to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier late morning with 14-17 from Lyle to Rufus. Afternoon wind fills in at 20-23 from Stevenosn to Rufus with 14-17 at Swell and Hood River, which do not respond well to systems moving through. High temp: 88F and muggy in Hood River and 94F out east.

Sunday starts with a 20-23 dawn patrol near Swell and fades to 17-20. The faded wind fills in all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Caveat: instability all the way from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to the eastern Gorge. High temp: 93F under clear sky.

Extended: offshore high pressure slowly rebuilds, and temps stay above normal across the area. While we won’t have the support of a marine layer, we will have the support of thermals and a synoptic-scale gradients. Expect at least 20mph each day next week. Tuesday looks like the windiest day, with ensembles agreeing on 25mph or a bit more. That’s all for now. Go hop in the river and cool off. I’ll see you out there!
