Gorge Wind Forecast
We’re just about to enter another stretch of very hot weather, during which the wind will do some switching around between easterly and westerly. The direction will be driven mostly by the location of the heat low. The location of the heat low, honestly, won’t matter for the heat – it’s just going to be really hot and increasingly smoky everywhere!
So, for today, we’ll have a pleasant day with west wind. The 6am gradients were .07 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). I expect the eastern Gorge gradients and wind will fade quickly today as the clouds burn off and high pressure builds to the west. For the first few hours of the day, areas east of Mosier will see 12-15 or so. After that, expect calm to light wind in those locations. For the western Gorge, we’ll have 17-20 from Viento to Swell for a few hours this morning. The GFS thinks the wind will fade a little bit, holding at 14-17 between Cascade Locks and Hood River until sunset. Given the extent of the marine clouds this morning, I wouldn’t be surprised to see 20-23 for a period this morning and 17-20 through sunset.
Everything changes tomorrow as high pressure builds over the entire Northwest. We’ll have light easterlies early and late, with a peak of 15-20 near Cascade Locks and Stevenson midday. Saturday looks stronger, with 25-30 near Rooster Rock and 20-25 near Stevenson for the first half of the day. The wind will fade after noon, backing off to 5-10 after 2pm for all locations.
If models are correct about Sunday, the heat low will shift to the east of the Cascades, setting up a blazing hot west wind day. We’ll start with W 5-10 in the morning. The wind will slowly build in the afternoon to 13-16 between Stevenson and Hood River.

Random Morning Thoughts
My Facebook feed the last 24 hours has been filled with tributes to Don Benton, a local philanthropist. I didn’t know Don all that well, but it seemed like any time I showed up to volunteer for a local social services cause, Don was there giving his time and energy, smiling happily and greeting me by name.
Klahre House. There was Don. The Next Door: Don again. WINGS: there’s Don. I’m sure there are many, many other places where Don’s goodness impacted people and programs, changing lives for the better.
One of Don’s final acts, it seems, was to think of others: making sure someone would buy everyone coffee in his name at Dog River. What a beautiful way to come together and reflect on someone who thrived on giving back.
Whether you knew Don or not, I want to offer a little gentle encouragement to follow in his footsteps today. Do a random act of kindness for a stranger or a friend. Have a small positive impact on the world. And when you do that act of kindness, really notice how it makes you feel. If “good” is the answer, keep reminding yourself of this and doing more acts of goodness. Get yourself hooked on giving like Don was. Be inspired by Don. Make our world a better place. We have a big hole to fill here in Hood River with Don’s death. Together we can fill that hole with love and generosity. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s a purely awesome morning with temps in the mid 50’s (open your doors and windows!) and highs forecast for the mid-90’s (don’t forget to shut those windows). Light wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks even hotter: low 60’s early and upper 90’s in the afternoon. Moderate easterlies in the western Gorge. No rainbows. Sunday looks just like Saturday, except we’ll have calm wind early and light westerlies in the afternoon along with increasing smoke. Labor day looks hot with light east wind.

White Sprinter Van of the Week
Road and Mountain Biking
Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and all other SDS and Kreps lands are closed from today on through the end of fire season. That’s when “significant rain” falls and the fire danger is considered over. Also currently closed: Dethman Ridge Road at Odell Creek and Highway 30 at Chenoweth Bridge. The second one has a bypass for bikes and pedestrians in place along The Dalles waterfront trail.
Upcoming Events
Today and every Friday start off with the Kickstand Coffee run, where four miles of jogging or walking gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!
Have an awesome day today!
