Friday. Hot and glassy. A good day for swimming and ice cream.

I almost didn’t write a forecast today because it’s going to be so light-windy and I want to get in an early morning bike ride, but then I realized how desperately I needed a cup of coffee. So, here’s your forecast. Expect glassy conditions this morning, just right for your rowing and wakeboarding and mountain…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

So, here’s your forecast. Expect glassy conditions this morning, just right for your rowing and wakeboarding and mountain climbing and spraying orchards and whatevering that requires no wind at all. We may see some easterlies at 10-15 at Steven’s Locks midday for a short period of time. Late in the day, much like yesterday, we may see westerlies at 7-10 or so from Rooster to Swell. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Saturday starts off light and variable with another round of wakeboarding or orchard-spraying or road biking conditions. The light-to-no conditions will hold through midday. Around 2pm, we should see the westerlies start to pick up, first in the far western Gorge, and eventually near Hood River. Expect 10-13 from Steven’s Locks to Swell by 2pm, picking up to 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles in the evening.

Sunday sees some marine clouds filter into the Metro area. A weak disturbance will pass to the south as well. The combo of the two will give us westerlies at 17-20 from Viento to Swell for Dawn Patrol. Later in the day, we’ll see the wind pick up to 23-26 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles. Don’t forget to check out the drag races at the Dallesport Airport if you’re out that way on Sunday.

Monday, the first Monday I haven’t had to go to PSU in forever, looks like 21-24 early and 23-26 in the afternoon.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

Everything was all good and fine last night, and then ODOT decided to grind up pavement and repave in front of my house at 10pm. I should say that I’ve really been enjoying the new pavement on I-84 recently. My drive is so peaceful when the pavement is smooth.

But back to the 10pm paving. That was annoying. I wanted to sleep. I wanted them to go away and pave my neighborhood during the day (which they don’t do, apparently, due to heat). “Not in my backyard!!!” I thought. (NIMBY)

We NIMBY a lot of things. We don’t want homeless shelters in our neighborhood. Or women’s shelters. Or food banks. Or Walmarts or oil terminals or garbage dumps or nuclear waste sites. When we have money and live in nice neighborhoods, we have enough voice and power to make sure those things don’t end up in our backyards. Instead, they are situated (mostly) where people don’t have power or voice or representation.

In other words, we dump these societal necessities in places where people are poor, of color, or desperate for jobs. Our society can’t function without shelters and nuclear waste dumps and garbage dumps. We all benefit from these services. But many of us don’t want to see them on a daily basis. And we can do that, because we have money and power. So, the next time you cry “NIMBY”, think how you are benefiting from the thing you don’t want to see. It’s the least you can do. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

Everything is open as far as I know, although Boulder Lakes is rumored to have some trees down. Whoopdee is closed due to logging. All trails on Kreps and SDS lands will close on August 13th due to fire season. That means Hospital Hill, East Ridge, and Whoopdee, which will be doubly closed.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events include the 7am Kickstand Coffee Run, where a 4 mile jog earns you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Tonight is the movie Up at Cascade Locks Marine Park, and while you’re watching the movie, keep your eyes peeled for the Perseid Meteor Shower. (I saw exactly one meteor last night when I got up to watch) There are stargazing parties at Rooster Rock and the Goldendale Observatory tonight.

Tomorrow brings a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon, a 9am women’s bike ride from Mountain View Cycles, and a half-day meditation retreat (free) at (air-conditioned) yoga samadhi at 1pm. There’s a geocache race at Meadows tomorrow and Mike’s Ice Cream’s 30th anniversary party starting at 6pm.

Tomorrow night is the band Stone in Love in The Dalles at Lewis and Clark Park and the movie Cinderella at Jackson Park in Hood River. There are drag races at the Dallesport airport on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
