Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! We’re in the Gorge, where we’re usually talking about wind, but the highlight for the upcoming week is the heat. In an unusual twist, we’ll have light to moderate westerlies throughout this heatwave. That’s despite high temps being 100+ degrees through Monday, at least. Models suggest much stronger westerlies will return sometime in the Wednesday-Thursday time frame as high temps drop from the triple digits into the 90s. Not quite the cooldown you were hoping for, but certainly windy when it happens!

Friday kicks off with pressures of 30.13/30.11/30.11 for very light onshore gradients. The wind turns briefly easterly at 10-15 this morning near Stevenson before switching to westerly this afternoon. We’ll see a slow build to 16-19mph from Stevenson to Hood River with the strongest wind coming after 5pm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 135-210kcfs, river temp is 66.56F, and high temp forecast is 100F on the dot.

Saturday brings a swap meet at Lot 1 on the Hood River waterfront. Sellers at 7am. Buyers at 8am. $10 to sell benefits Columbia Gorge Wind and Water Association (CGW2). The day starts perfect for a swap: dead calm. By early afternoon, westerlies rise to 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier. They pick up a little more as we approach the evening: 18-22 from Stevenson to Doug’s. High temp: 100F. Again.

Friday starts dead calm. Break out the ski boats! Not much happens during the day. Models take the westerlies to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River, maybe to Rowena, after 5pm. High temp: 100F. A weak impulse moves through on Saturday. The day starts dead calm, again. From mid-afternoon on, we should see 17-20 or a bit more from Stevenson to Rowena. High temp: 101. Sunday looks like a carbon copy of Saturday with temps a few degrees hotter.

Thanks to the heat low being centered over the Columbia Basin on Sunday, westerlies continue. The day starts with 10-13 from Stevenson to Viento. Westerlies build slowly as they wait for desert heat to outpace the urban heat island. By late afternoon, we’ll have 18-21 from Mosier to Doug’s with 14-17 at Swell and 18-21 from Stevenson to Viento. After 5pm, the wind picks up to 20-23 from Stevenson to Avery. High temp rise a few degrees above 100.

I’m glad you find it helpful, and I appreciate your kindness in supporting the work I’m doing!   Extended: Very hot weather sticks around Monday and Tuesday. Models knock the wind down both days, but hey, that could change. Models then insist on slightly cooler temps for the middle of next week. Not cool, by any means, and definitely still hot, but enough downward trend to drive and upward trend in westerlies. As of today, models have the start of the stronger wind as Wednesday, but hold that lightly. These heat waves tend to last longer than initially predicted, and this one is a doozy. Stay cool. Stay hydrated. See you on the water!
