Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Forecast models are trending downward with their precipitation predictions. Once again, spring has decided to come early to the mountains; no more super-March snowstorms like we had in the past. And so far, this year’s La Nina has not held up to the predictions – we’re usually over the Meadows annual average (415”) in a La Nina year. We could still make it up, but it sure doesn’t look like we’re going to hit 500” or 600”… The next week or so won’t help – there’s essentially zero precipitation forecast through Tuesday.

Friday will be high overcast. Snow conditions will be a mix of granular and wet pack – lack of clear sky overnight means the snow did not snap hard. Lack of sun today will probably prevent a sloppy mess in the afternoon. So, all-in-all, a decent day to go up and play. The sky will be high overcast this morning and may transition to partly cloudy this afternoon and mostly cloudy overnight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9000′ this morning, 8000′ this afternoon, and 6500′ overnight. Wind: SW 10-20 for the 24 hour period.

Saturday starts mostly cloudy, turns cloudy in the afternoon, and clears overnight. No precip. The FAF will be 6500′ in the morning, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ overnight. Wind: SW 10 in the morning, S 5-10 in the afternoon, and SE 10 overnight. Sunday morning looks clear, but high clouds move in during the day. No precip. Freezing level: 9000′ all day dropping to 8000′ overnight. Wind: SE 10 in the morning, SW 10 in the afternoon, and NE 5 after midnight. Sprinkles are not out of the question late Monday, and flurries are not out of the question early Tuesday, but we’re only looking at trace amounts. To find more precip, we have to look way out into the almost-guessing zone. Enjoy your turns!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light easterlies this morning (it’s Friday) quickly give way to calm wind mid-morning. By early afternoon, westerlies pick up to 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier. They’ll continue to climb to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Avery late afternoon into the evening. River flow is 149kcfs, river temp is 43F, and high temp forecast is 64F. Saturday will be calm all day. High temp: 69F. Sunday will be light and variable in the morning with westerlies at 10-13 in the afternoon between Stevenson and The Dalles. High temp: 69F. Slight chance of thunder.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Overcast sky transitions to a partly cloudy day later. Temps will be in the mid-upper 30’s early and mid 60’s later. Calm wind early. Moderate westerlies later. No rainbows. Saturday will be mostly cloudy in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 60’s later. Calm wind. No rainbows. Sunday will be clear in the morning and high overcast later. Chance of thunder in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light and variable wind early. Light westerlies in the afternoon. 1% chance of rainbows.

Cycling

It’s brown pow season with perfect dirt. BUT NOT AT POST CANYON. I saw bikes covered in trails (mud) coming out of there yesterday. If you ride when it’s muddy, you’ll do permanent damage. Stop it! There’s plenty of time to ride Post this spring and summer and next fall. Ride Syncline or somewhere else! Dirty Fingers hosts the “Best of Mountain Sports” Film Festival on March 26th at 7pm.

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. There’s a shop mountain bike ride with the Mountain View Cycles crew at Syncline on Wednesday evenings at 5:45pm.The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle on Sunday at 11am at the Event Site.
