Friday. Have you seen your weekend umbrella?

It’s another lovely day in the Gorge, but the gradients this morning (Friday) are pretty weak: .02 and .04. River temp is 67 degrees and flow is 98.4kcfs. The fish counts from yesterday have not yet been posted. Today’s a tricky one to forecast. Models suggest no more than 5-10 today, but I suspect, simply…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Models suggest no more than 5-10 today, but I suspect, simply based on gut instinct, that we’ll see a slow build to 13-16 this afternoon. I wouldn’t plan on it, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if it happens. Strongest, earliest wind today will be at Steven’s Locks, followed by wind from Steven’s Locks to Mosier. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

The forecast gets even trickier for the weekend as our first big rain system moves in, carrying with it moisture from typhoon Meranti. All the rain and dynamics will make the wind nearly impossible to predict. It will also be up and down, gusty, and prone to shutting off. That said, you can expect 16-19 to start the day from Viento to Arlington. It’s best to get that wind early before the rain hits. Once the sky starts falling, the wind will drop to unreliable 13-16 or less.

Sunday also starts off rainy. An upper low off the coast will turn the gradients slack, leaving us with light and variable wind. As that low moves inland in the afternoon, the rain will end and the wind will pick up. Once you start seeing sunbreaks, you can head east. The wind will eventually rise to 25-28 from Rowena to Arlington in the afternoon. The western Gorge, likely still in the clouds, will get gusty 12-15 on Sunday.

As of right now, Monday looks like light wind to start with west 24-27 in the afternoon from Viento to Rufus.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

It seems that my circadian rhythms are working just fine: the later sunrise happens, the later I get out of bed. It’s not so great for you, because it means your forecast comes a bit later each day. This is good for me; I’m building up a sleep savings account for the winter. I’ll start making withdrawals as soon as ski season starts.

Of course we can’t really do that – save up sleep for later. We can do things to maximize the efficiency of the time we spend in bed. For example, we can make sure bed is for sleeping, not for thinking, Facebooking, reading, ruminating, etc. If we do those things in bed, our body comes to expect them, in bed, before sleep.

So, move those activities to a chair, the floor, your living room hammock, or your 9 foot tall teddy bear. When you become sleepy in that location, put down the object of focus. Get up. Go pee. Go directly to bed. Go to sleep. You’ll save yourself a few minutes (or in my case, half an hour) by associating bed with sleep, not with pre-sleep wind-down activities. It might take a while to condition yourself, but it’ll happen.

And one other thing: just after you close your eyes, set a strong intention to have pleasant, restful dreams. Focus on that for 30 seconds, and see how it affects your sleep. Works for me. Might not work for you, but it won’t hurt to try. Have an awesome day (and night).

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

Hospital Hill and Whoopdee are closed for fire season. That even applies to the four cars that were parked at the Spring Street trailhead yesterday. If you insist on trespassing, you will end up paying the consequences, and so will the rest of us in the form of restricted access. Yes, the rules apply to YOU too!

Upcoming Events

Today is the weekly Kickstand Coffee run at 7am, where jogging 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s more happening tomorrow, with an 8am trail run in Post Canyon, a 9 o’clock women’s bike ride at Mt. View Cycles, and free yoga at Sorosis Park at 10:30.

Timberline has the Salmon River Headwaters cleanup tomorrow starting at 10, the White Salmon Grange has a meditation retreat that starts at 1, and the Music Festival of the Gorge is at the Hood River Waterfront starting at 1. Sunday is the Gorge Kids Triathlon at Hood River’s waterfront park, and it’s looking like a good chance of rain for that event, so bring an umbrella if you’re spectating.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
