Today is going to be a sunny, blustery day on Mt. Hood. With the strong east wind, it’s a good idea to check your preferred ski area’s website to see which lifts they are running. Timberline tends to get hammered by the east wind. Meadows, not so much. Skibowl, much more sheltered, will likely survive the east wind better than its higher-elevation brothers. As of 6:20am, there weren’t many updates available, but Meadows did have Cascade on wind standby. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
You can expect the wind and clear sky to continue all day today. The free air freezing level will be at the surface with 5000′ temps maxing out in the mid to upper 20’s. That wind… it’ll be ESE 40-45 all day long.
Expect sunshine tomorrow. The free air freezing level will be at the surface with 5000′ temps in the low 20’s all day. The wind will be ESE 35-40 in the morning and ESE 15-20 in the afternoon.

Sunday starts off sunny but becomes cloudy by mid-morning as a weak, mostly dry weather system moves into the Northwest. The free air freezing level will be at the surface all day, with 5000′ temps in the mid 20’s early and right around freezing in the afternoon. We may see a few snow flurries or a period of light sleet/needles/not-quite-snow between 1pm and 7pm. Wind on Sunday will be SW 10-15 early and SW 15-20 in the afternoon.
As of right now, it looks like another weather system will move in late Monday afternoon or early Monday evening. The sounding model suggests the snow level will be at 5000′ with this system, but the 850mb temp model suggests 5000′ will be at 33-36 degrees. In other words, there’s a question about precipitation type. Let’s wait a day or two and see how things shake out before making predictions, okay?
It’s Temira’s birthday week. Send her a card!
Happy New Year, everyone! The first week or so of January is my birthday week. It’s the one time of year I feel totally okay asking for the things that means the absolute most to me: love and positive feedback. Do you have a greeting card of any sort sitting around? Do you have a few extra moments? Please take the time to send me birthday greetings letting me know how I and this forecast impact your world in a positive way. That kind of feedback in tangible, greeting card form, keeps me going and keeps me forecasting. My address: Temira. PO Box 841. Hood River, Oregon. 97031. Thank you so much for taking the time. Have a wonderful 2016!
Gorge Wind Forecast
This east wind event is one of those monster east wind events where the easterlies aren’t just in the Gorge. They’re everywhere. No, you cannot hide from the east wind today. It’s here on the Columbia, and it’s way up high in the atmosphere. It’s shutting down lifts at ski resorts, and it’s blowing snow off the top of Mt. Hood. Because the easterlies aren’t just concentrated in the Gorge today, they’re not as strong as they could be given the E .26 gradient at 5am. We’ll see east wind at 35-45 at Rooster today with 30-35 at Steven’s Locks. The wind chill last I looked was 12 degrees at Rooster. Brrrrr. Expect east wind at 35-45 tomorrow and 35-45 on Sunday. Monday looks like E 30-4 and Tuesday looks like 30 early and 20 in the afternoon.
Random Morning Thoughts
The last two years, for the first couple weeks of January. I’ve asked people to send me birthday cards telling me why they love me. I feel a bit silly doing this – we Americans aren’t acculturated to ask for our emotional needs to be met. Heck, we’re not accustomed to asking for help in general. The American Dream tells us we should buck up and do everything ourselves. Rugged individualism, it’s the s**t!
I think it’s important to get our emotional needs met. We all need love, a sense of belonging and connection to others. We all need to know that we matter. In addition, to function well, we need a positive/negative feedback ratio of 4 to 1. Both John Gottman, the love researcher, and management theory researchers have come across the same ratio.
Life can be lacking in positive feedback. To up that ratio, it’s important to ask for the positive feedback you’re craving. It’s also important to eliminate negativity from your world, as much as possible, but that’s a different conversation.
It’s a new year. See if you can find a way to ask for what you need. Believe it or not, others will feel good giving you positive feedback. It’s win-win all around. Kindness and generosity benefit both the giver and the receiver, so it’s okay to give as much as you can. You’ll be making the world a better, happier place. So… if you have time to send me a card telling why you love me and/or how I’m impacting your world in a positive way, that would be awesome. My address is above. While you’re at it, send one to your best friend too – they’ll love it. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
I stepped outside to look at the sky, and to hopefully catch some aurora, but all I caught was a little chill and a view of the Nothing. Models suggest the Nothing will break up early this afternoon, leaving us with sunshine. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and right around 30 this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Models suggest we’ll stay clear tonight, but I’m not sure I’m buying it. If it clears off, temps will be in the single digits where there’s snow on the ground. Otherwise, expect temps in the low 20’s tomorrow morning.
Tomorrow does looks sunny for much of the day. Temps will rise to right around 30 in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday starts off sunny and ends up cloudy as a weather system moves over us from the south. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and the low 30’s in the afternoon. There’s a chance of a few flurries between 1pm and 7pm, but this system doesn’t have much moisture.
Looking ahead to next week, models show a wetter system moving in Monday night around 7pm. The GFS says we’ll be above freezing by that point. That’s possible, and the 30-40mph east wind predicted for Monday suggests otherwise. It’s going to be a close one – we may end up with freezing rain or snow in the Gorge Monday night, just in time for me to drive home from school in Portland. Ack.
White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
It’s very cold today, and isn’t going to get above freezing. Does that mean Syncline will stay frozen enough to ride? Maybe. Depends on whether the sun comes out. If the sun comes out, it’ll melt, and you’ll muck it up. If you get out early, you might just be able to sneak in a few lower Syncline laps. Brrrr. Those east winds will be chilly over there! On the roads, there will be icy areas. Careful! In the gym, on the trainer, it’ll be warm and dry. Boring, perhaps, but warm and dry nonetheless.

Upcoming Events
It’s New Year’s Day, and if I know those runner folks at all, they’ll be out doing the Kickstand Coffee Run this morning at 7am. 4.1 miles, free coffee and a donut. There’s a trail run at 8am tomorrow from the bottom of Post Canyon Road. I’d assume you’ll want shoe chains or studded running shoes for that one. The Burton Mountain Festival is at Meadows all weekend long with free Burton demos. The (very) Cold Lap cyclocross ride is tomorrow, leaving Dirty Fingers at 3pm. Plan on doing some yoga on Sunday – there are three by-donation classes: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River.
Have an awesome day today!
