Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Not much happens in wind world on Friday and Saturday. This should give you an opportunity to get out mountain biking – the dirt was pretty darn good in Post yesterday (not that I can ride right now, but the “running” I did yesterday was on good dirt). Easterlies Sunday morning might get you on the river, and westerlies Sunday afternoon might be enough out east. A better chance for wind arises on Monday. After that: a warming trend is likely through the middle of next week which results in not much wind. Towards the the end of the week, the Euro ensemble hints at a cooldown with the potential for some wind next Friday and Saturday… but that’s a LONG ways out to be making plans…
Friday started off great for fishing and not great for wind sports. Gradients were nearly flat: 29.87/29.87/29.88, and the wind was calm or light/variable all through the Gorge. Conditions stay windless this morning. Afternoon westerlies rise to 10-13mph between Stevenson and the Hatch with 7-10mph near Hood River. In the evening, westerlies build to 13-16mph between Avery and Rufus. River flow over the last 24 hours was 76-108kcfs, river temp is 69.8F, and high temp forecast is 71 with clouds and showers and sunbreaks and rainbows.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Not much at all happens on Saturday: we’re expecting light and variable wind all day long. High temp: 71 degrees with drizzle possible early and showers later.
On Sunday, models give us east wind at 20-25mph in the morning near Iwash (Rooster) Rock with 15mph at Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento. Easterlies die off in the afternoon. As a low moves north into Idaho mid-afternoon, we could see desert westerlies rise to 21-24mph. Best chance will be between Avery and Boardman. The GFS deterministic is quite optimistic about this. Euro ensembles: not so optimistica at all – very few members believe in the windy scenario. High temp: 73F in Hood River and 76F in the desert. Atmospheric instability could impact wind quality out in the desert – keep an eye out for building thunderheads and clear the water if they coalesce.
Looking into the deep future: models hint at, but don’t promise, the return of offshore high pressure and an onshore temp gradient for Monday. The Euro ensemble predicts anything from light westerlies to moderately strong westerlies. For now, I’ll say that 17-20mph or more is likely, and there’s a decent probability of 25mph average speeds. Tuesday and Wednesday are almost certain to be too light for windsports. Starting Thursday, models hint at a return to westerlies, but uncertainty is quite high about the details. Good morning, neighbors! Fall weather sticks around for a few more days. Warmer weather returns for the first half of next week. Starting next Thursday, uncertainty skyrockets. About 40% of our ensemble members point at the possibility of rain for the weekend of the 12th. Other neat news: the snow level hovers around 7500′ through Saturday morning which means our mountains will look mighty pretty when they emerge from the clouds. It’s looking pretty snowy for early September on the Meadows Cascade cam this morning!
Weather for Friday starts with a bit of drizzle west of The Dalles. In the afternoon, showers and thundershowers are possible along the Cascade Crest and for areas south of the Nch’i Wana (Columbia). At least some clouds stick around all day. Highs range from 70 in Stevenson to 75 in The Dalles and the desert. Wind will be perfect for fishing this morning: dead calm. Afternoon: 10-15mph between Stevenson and Rufus with less wind to the east and west.
Saturday morning starts drizzly between Troutdale and Boardman. Drizzle turns to showers/thundershowers in the morning. Dry weather is likely east of Cascade Locks in the afternoon. Temps will be in the 45-55 range to start the day (snow level 7000′), and 70-73 degrees to finish. Wind will be out of the west under 10mph all day long all through the Gorge.
Drizzle is likely from morning into the afternoon Sunday for areas west of Celilo Village. After 2pm, the weather dries out for everyone west of Boardman – way out east in the desert, an afternoon round of drizzle is likely. Morning temps: 45-55. Afternoon: 73-77. Wind will be light easterly at dawn. Mid-morning brings east 20-25mph between Iwash (schl*ng) Rock and Viento with light wind to the east. In the afternoon, the wind dies off in the western Gorge and picks up to west 20-25mph from The Dalles to Boardman. Weird day for wind, eh?
Sunnier, breezier weather is likely on Monday followed by warmer (79-83), sunny weather on Tuesday with light east wind. Ditto for Wednesday. Beyond that, model agreement is minimal, so let’s leave it here for now. Safe travels. -TATAS
