Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Powder keeps piling up for the next couple of days. We then shift to flurries followed by a couple days of cold, dry, sunny weather and perfect packed powder conditions.

About a foot of new snow has accumulated over the last 24 hours. That’s a nice start to your Christmas Eve riding. Another foot or so is in the forecast for the next 24 hours. The snow level will be 2000′ this morning and will fall to 1000′ or less tonight. About 0.6-0.8” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day today for 7-9” powder. Orographic assistance could add to that total. Another 0.1” to 0.2” is forecast tonight, for an inch or two or three more. Wind: W 35 early, WSW 30-40 through the evening, and W 30 after midnight.

A short break in the snowfall is possible early Saturday, but another round of snow quickly arrives. The snow level will be 1000′ or less in the morning and down to sea level in the evening. This morning’s forecast calls for 0.3” to 0.4” WE during the day, for 3-5” dry, fluffy powder. Another 0.3” is forecast overnight, for 3-4” of Champagne powder. Wind: W 30 early, WSW 20-25 mid-morning, SW 15-20 in the afternoon, WSW 25-30 in the evening, and W 20 overnight (which should up snowfall rates thanks to orographics).

Sunday starts out with snow and switches to flurries. Intermittent sun breaks are possible. The snow level will be sea level all day long, so expect a long, snowy drive to the slopes. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for 2-3” perfect powder. Another 0.1 to 0.2” WE is expected overnight for 1-3” more. Wind: W 20 morning, WSW 25-35 in the afternoon, W 10-15 in the evening, and SW 5-10 overnight. Monday looks dry and cold with decreasing clouds. It appears we may see some sunshine and very cold conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much going on Friday: variable to 10mph to start the day. Stevenson will pick up to gust 15-20 with intermittent rain. River flow is 113kcfs, river temp is 43F, and high temp forecast is 39F. Saturday starts calm and pretty much stays that way with a short period of W 10-13 east of The Dalles in the early evening. High temp: 39F. Sunday will be light westerly in the morning with widespread easterlies at 10-15mph in the afternoon. High temp: 33F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Intermittent rain is the plan for Friday. Temps will be in the upper 30’s all day. Light wind. 89% chance of rainbows. Saturday starts with light snow, might switch to rain, and switches back to light snow. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and mid to upper 30’s later. Calm wind. 21% chance of rainbows. Sunday brings snow flurries with sun breaks during the day and another round of flurries overnight. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and low 30’s later. Light westerlies early. Light to moderate easterlies later. No rainbows.

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride at Syncline on Tuesday evenings at 5:45pm.
