Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Grooming report from Meadows this morning is “WOW” and “awesome”, so you’ll be wanting to get up to the slopes for some groom, some parks, and some Nordic. You’ll find sunshine on Friday, clouds on Saturday, snow on Sunday, and rain on Monday and Tuesday. Such is the nature of the Northwest – and heck, we need all the moisture we can get!

Friday starts off clear and cold with temps in the teens. Temps will rise near 32F in the afternoon. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ this morning, 1000′ this afternoon, and will rise to 6000′ (temps +1C at 6000′) overnight. No precip. Wind: light/variable early. S 0-10 this afternoon, and SSW 5-15 overnight.

Saturday starts clear, but high clouds quickly arrive. Snow moves in overnight. The FAF will be 6000′ in the morning and 5500′ in the afternoon. The snow level will drop to 3500′ when the precip arrives around 10pm. Up to 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight, for 2-4” new snow. Wind: SSW 5-15 early, SW 15-30 in the afternoon, and SW 20-40 overnight.

Sunday brings additional snow during the day followed by flurries at night. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight with 850mb temps climbing 1-3C above freezing. Total snowfall will be 0.4” WE during the day, for 3-4” somewhat dense snow. A trace is forecast overnight. Wind: SW 20-40 in the morning, SW 15-25 in the afternoon, and SW 15-30 overnight.

The snow level quickly rises to 8000′ on Monday and hangs out within 1000′ of that through Tuesday morning. There’s lots of range in the precip predictions for this time period. Given that the wind will be SW, WSW, or W, we’re probably looking at 2” rather than 4”. But hey, that could change! Models then give us more rain (quantity unknown) on Tuesday. Temps drop cold enough for snow from midday Wednesday on. Have a lovely weekend!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Afternoon wind at rooster drops to 30-35. River flow is 142kcfs, river temp is 36F, and high temp forecast is 41F (or less). Saturday starts with temps in the 20’s and strong easterlies. Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky stays that way. Temps will be in the upper teens early and upper 30’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Saturday starts clear and turns high overcast. Precip comes in overnight, probably as wet snow. Temps will be in the low 20’s early and upper 30’s later. Easterlies. No rainbows. Sunday starts with wet snow and switches to rain. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and upper 30’s later. Light easterlies. No rainbows.

Cycling

FREEZE THAW: It rained enough this week that sub-freezing overnight temps and daytime sunshine will render the trails susceptible to damage. Please, just don’t. You can take a week off riding while the temps moderate. Out in the woods, the trails above 2000′ are snow covered. Down below: brown pow to the east and wet conditions in Post Canyon. Freeze-thaw information: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you will cause significant damage. Then people will have to come fix your messes instead of building new trails. Better idea: gravel and road riding.
