Gorge Wind Forecast
Happy Friday, everyone! I’m headed out on a silent retreat until next Wednesday. Here’s the best I can do for ya for the next week… We’ll see decreasing marine clouds and increasing heat through the middle of next week. Models disagree on the intensity of the heat: the GFS keeps us in the 90’s and the Euro takes us well into the 100’s. One thing seems clear: we’re likely to see a dramatic crash in temps at the end of this heatwave towards the end of the week, setting us up for a potentially ginormous day on the river.
For Friday, a weak trough moves east this morning, reinforcing the marine layer. As you saw yesterday afternoon, that had a truly wonderful effect on the wind at Swell late in the day. Friday started with gradients of .07 and .08. Flow is 135kcfs and river temp is a balmy 70 degrees. Morning wind will be steadiest east of the clouds, with 18-22 east of The Dalles. As things settle into a groove today, the wind will build to 26-29 from Mosier to Arlington. Once again, Swell’s a maybe. If these low clouds burn back, add it to the mix with 26-29. Clouds stick around = gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Swell Friday afternoon.
Saturday’s clouds will be confined to areas far west of here as high pressure builds overhead. We’ll have 7-10 from Stevenson to Swell early, slowly building to 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Sunday looks hotter, smokier, and less windy: light westerlies in the western Gorge (less than 10, maybe less than 5) and light easterlies east of Hood River (less than 5mph).
As of right now, and given model inconsistencies, this isn’t going to be all that accurate… Monday: 21-24. Tuesday: 25-29. Blah blah blah, Friday: 30-40. That could also happen Thursday or Saturday depending on how this heat wave pans out.
BONUS: Jones Friday: nope. Saturday: 15-18. Sunday: 14-17. Sauvie’s Friday: nope. Saturday: 10-13 late. Sunday: nope. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: X/X/25-30, NW swell 4′ at 11 seconds. Saturday: 5-10/5-10/10-15, NW 3′ @ 10. Sunday: nope/nope/nope, W swell 5′ @ 10. Surfing, anyone?
Random Morning Thoughts
One of the fun things that can happen to us humans is that we get ‘triggered’ by something. In technical parlance, this means our fight-flight-freeze system gets triggered. We then do things that, in the moment, we perceive as protective. The problem is that we aren’t quite in our right minds.
When we calm down, we may find ourselves ashamed of what we’ve done. Maybe we drank, used drugs, lied, got violent, ran away, curled up in a ball on the floor, or did any number of things that left us asking, “Why the heck did I do that?” That’s the ideal outcome – many people just feel ashamed or regretful.
The key, when this happens, is to ask “Why?” and explore the reasons for our behavior. Bringing a sense of curiosity to the situation, perhaps a sense of amazement at and awe of our bad behavior can help us face our silliness. Exploring it will give us more power the next time we are ‘triggered’, and that can help us behave better. May you be calm and grounded. Have an awesome day.
