Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Happy Friday. I’m headed out on a silent retreat today. I’ll be back for you next Friday. In between now and then, there’s pretty good agreement in the models. You’ll have easterlies Friday and Saturday, moderate westerlies Sunday, and stronger west wind Monday and Tuesday. After that? Heat looks to rebuild for a couple days. This time of year, that’s generally a setup for east wind.

Is this feeling helpful? If so, go ahead and make a contribution using Paypal to support it. Send $19.99 or more, and I’ll send the forecast to your inbox for a year.

Fro Friday, we start with pressures of 30.03/30.11/30.11 for gradients of E 0.08 and flat. That’ll be enough for easterlies at 20mph or so at both Iwash (Rooster) and Stevenson. Viento should be 15-18ish. The wind holds for a few hours then plummets. Expect light and variable wind after 2pm all the way from Iwash Rock east to Arlington. River flow over the last 24 hours was 79-164kcfs, river temp is 69.44F, and high temp forecast is 92F.

Saturday starts with easterlies at 14-17 at Stevenson and Viento with 12-15 near Iwash. The wind rises to 17-20 at Stevenson for a few hours, and Iwash rises to 15-18. The wind falls to 15mph at Iwash, Stevenson, and Viento late morning before dropping further in the afternoon: Iwash finishes light/variable, and Stevenson ends the day with E 10-13. High temp: 94F and sunny.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

Sunday sees the heat low shift to the east. West wind returns, but it’s accompanied by atmospheric instability. This will make the wind gusty and reliable. That said, there should be enough to get many of you on the river. The day starts with 10-13 from Viento to Swell. Elsewhere: light/variable. Mid-morning sees the wind pick up to 16=19 from Stevenson to Swell with 10-13 from Hood River to Mosier. Models suggest a dip back to 11-14 as afternoon heating kicks in, but they also suggest a bump for the evening session: 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. East of Mosier, the wind remains light, potentially easterlies at 5mph, all day long. High temp: 94F for Hood River with high clouds and a chance of thunder in the afternoon.

Extended: A deep and extensive marine push on Monday morning combines with a heat low in the desert. Instability may be present in the eastern Gorge, and it may also stay to the south of us. Either way… it should be windy. Models start the day with 24-27+ all the way from Viento (Stevenson will be cloudy and probably 19-22) to Arlington. Afternoon wind rises to 30-33 all the way from Swell to Arlington. Threemile: a bit less. High temp: 77F for Hood River and 85F for Arlington. Models keep the wind going on Tuesday, but they keep the strongest wind west of The Dalles. Call it 25-28 for now. But there’s quite a bit of range in the forecasts, so that may change. Easterlies return for Wednesday and probably Thursday as another round of heat settles in. The hottest weather should shift east on Friday and bring back the westerlies just in time for me to be back from retreat. Have a great week, everyone!
