Gorge Wind Forecast
Active weather persists for the next few days. That’ll keep the wind focused east of the Cascade Crest for the most part. Temps will hover below 70 degrees, and the sky will be cloudy much of the time. Sure doesn’t feel like mid-June, does it? The Poopy Water Warning persists for the Event Site and Nichols Boat Basin. River flow remains above 400,000cfs with very strong current. Be cautious.
Let’s look at Friday. We have a weather system pushing up from the south this morning with synoptic-scale westerlies thanks to a low in Idaho. Rain is coming for the western Gorge and will push to The Dalles intermittently through early afternoon. That’s sounds about as ideal as you’re guessing: not ideal at all! Despite all this, westerlies are in the teens to low 20’s in the west and single digits out east to start the day. Models suggest that, despite the rain, the wind will climb to gusty 25-29 from Viento (maybe Stevenson, but unlikely) to Threemile mid-morning with 22-25 east of Threemile. A dip is then projected early afternoon. The best bet appears to be the evening session with gusty 27-31 from The Dalles to Boardman and 13-16 west of The Dalles. River flow is 387-436 kcfs (too much for the Rufus stretch), river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 62F.
Saturday daytime weather combines moderate westerlies with clouds, cool temps, and drizzle west of Stevenson. Westerlies start at 5-10 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 15-18 east of The Dalles out to Boardman. Afternoon: 18-23 from Lyle to Arlington with 10-13 in the western Gorge. High temp: 63F.
Offshore high pressure starts to exert a bit more influence on Sunday, but there will still be weak disturbances sliding through. Western Gorge wind will be lackluster with morning drizzle and clouds all day. Westerlies start off light out east as well. Midday wind rises to 19-23 from Avery to Boardman with 7-10 west of The Dalles. Models suggest the wind will peak at 24-27 from Avery to Boardman from mid-afternoon on. West of The Dalles, the wind will be lighter, somewhere in the 10-15 range. High temp: 65F. Next week looks to start with continued west flow. Nothing spectacularly nuking lurks on the horizon, but the westerlies should stick around.

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Looking at the weekend, we have the Bend Short Track Series race, 12 Hours of Post Canyon, the Alpine Epic Race (Oakridge), the annual summer solstice party at Illumination Saddle, the Pray for Wind Party at Kickstand, the Central Gorge Master Gardeners Tour, the White Salmon Backyard Half Marathon, and Six Hours of Mt. Hood MTB race.
Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.
Cycling
It seems likely that Post is too wet to ride. Surveyor’s and Dog River are open. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
