Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Friday, everyone! Not much happening today for wind, but models are hinting at something more than nothing for the weekend. Ensembles suggest we’ll have some wind on Monday and Tuesday as well. To be honest, there’s not a lot of agreement in the models at this point, and they always struggle with accurate predictions this time of year. You’ll see the lack of trust in the models in the wording of the upcoming forecast. Take any predictions, mine or anyone else’s, with a grain of salt this time of year.

For Friday, pressures at 5am were 29.90/29.89/29.93 for 0.01 and E 0.04. Rain was falling to start the day. Light and variable wind early picks up to E 15 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento for a few hours mid to late morning. The wind fades to less than 10mph by 2pm. River flow yesterday was 62-95kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 58F.

Saturday starts off calm and chilly. The wind slowly builds to 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River by early afternoon. Models suggest we’ll see an eastward shift mid-afternoon. As of this morning, they like 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River with 16-19 from Mosier to The Dalles. High temp: 68F. Sunday starts with enough gradient for low teens from Viento to Rufus, but thanks to the chill in the air, the wind will likely be less. There’s a possibility of 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Areas east of The Dalles: calm or very light after 1pm or so. High temp: 68F.

We’re expecting showers on Monday all the way east to Arlington, but models are also calling for 17-20. Doesn’t sound like high-quality wind, does it? There’s too much range in the ensembles to make a prediction for Tuesday, so let’s leave this here for now. Have a great day today!

Cycling

Yesterday was brown pow. After last night’s rain, things are probably slick again. Choose your trails wisely – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
