Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Light snowfall on the mountain for Friday morning gives way to mostly clear sky in the afternoon. A dry and warmer day is on tap for Saturday followed by some snow on Sunday. Looking into next week (when I’ll be on vacation), a series of weak systems comes out of the W or NW, bringing intermittent light precip to the mountain; temps look marginal. Models are generally agreeing on a powerful cold front coming out of Alaska next Friday, which could result in significant snowfall. That is a long, long way out to be trusting the forecast!

For Friday, you’ll find a garden-variety dust-on-crust day on the mountain. Light snowfall continues through midday, turning into flurries and sunbreaks in the afternoon. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2000′ later, and will drop back to the surface near Mt. Hood overnight. About 0.1” water value (WV) falls during the day, for an inch of new snow. Wind will be NW 25-30 early, NW 15-20 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 overnight.

Saturday looks partly cloudy in the morning with high clouds in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 0′ early, 5500′ in the afternoon, and about 2000′ overnight. No precip. Wind will be NW 10-15 early, W 15 in the afternoon, and SW 10-15 overnight.

Looking at Sunday, a weak system moves in from the WSW. 5000′ temps will be 0-2C to start and will drop a couple of degrees. This translates to a snow quality of about 4000-5000′ snow level equivalent, but temps will be sub-freezing all around Mt. Hood, for a snow level of 0-500′. Anyway, that all translates to 0.2” WV that falls in the afternoon as 1-2” of dense new snow. Another trace or so falls overnight. Wind will be SW 10-15 early, SSW 10-15 in the afternoon, S 10 overnight, and NE 10 by Monday morning. You could also call that “light and variable”!

Looking at Monday and Tuesday, things warm up on the mountain. The freezing level climbs to 9000′ by Tuesday afternoon. Wow. Weak weather systems move through the area all week, bringing periods of light rain and periods of light snow to Mt. Hood. The next impressive thing in the long-range forecast is a beast of a cold front with a tropical moisture tap Friday into Saturday. If the forecast doesn’t change, this has the potential to bring a LOT of snow to Mt. Hood. Fingers crossed!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light and variable wind on Friday morning picks up to W 12-15 midday everywhere and then fades to 5-10 in the afternoon. River flow is 106kcfs and temp is 43 degrees. Saturday starts with light easterlies. The wind picks up to E 15-20 after sunrise and holds through the day. Sunday starts with E 25-30, picks up to E 35-45, and backs off to 25-30.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Friday morning is starting off with partly cloudy sky in some areas and Nothing in others. I felt a few raindrops on my head when I went outside, which tells me there’s some freezing rain happening (my car roof is icy) and also some snow flurries above maybe 500-1000′. Temps today will be right at freezing early and will rise to the low 40’s (under clear sky – Nothing areas stay in the 30’s). Light west wind. 44% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy becoming high overcast. Temps will be right at freezing early and near 40 in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday brings some light snow to the Gorge before rain returns in the afternoon. Trace to 1” accumulation. Temps: low 30’s early and near 40 in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Road and Mountain Biking

All trails are under a freeze-thaw alert. Syncline, especially, is susceptible to this, as it is south-facing. Please don’t ride it, because you’ll do significant damage to those thawing trails. Your best bet for riding today is anything under the canopy of trees. Don’t ride up Seven Streams, as areas in the clearcut are freeze-thaw. A fun thing to do is ride up Post Canyon Road and ride down Mitchell Ridge. Repeat.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and the Kickstand Coffee Donut run is on – 7am, 4 miles, free cup of coffee and donut. There’s Zumba Gold at the Hood River Adult Center at 9am, and there’s a by-donation yoga class at 4pm at Yoga Samadhi.
