Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Despite rain falling in the Gorge and the lowlands this morning, it’s sunny as can be (and cold AF) on the slopes. The groom will be epic packed powder today wherever you look, but it’s likely the powerful April sun will have an impact on it despite temps in the single digits. Snowy weather returns tonight and Saturday night with dry weather Friday and Sunday. The next powerful system swings in on Monday, but the deets aren’t yet clear.

So, Thursday starts out brilliantly clear and cold with temps in the single digits on the slopes. That’s really quite ridiculous for this time of year! Snow quality will be epic packed powder groom with dry, deep powder off piste in areas that did not open yesterday. Practice deep snow safety. Thanks to instability, clouds move in this afternoon. They’ll bring snow, a chance of thunder, maybe some hail or graupel, and unknown amounts of snowfall. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Up to a trace is forecast during the day, and up to 0.4” water equivalent (WE) for 4-5” new snow overnight. That’s a big maybe and depends on where showers set up. Wind: W 10-15 most of the day rising to W 20 overnight.

Friday starts out clear above with clouds below, but a system quickly moves in with just a bit of snow. Groom remains epic packed powder. Clear sky returns in the afternoon. The snow level will be 1000′ or less in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ or less overnight. Just a trace of snow will fall in the morning before clear sky returns. Wind: W 20 in the morning, variable to 5mph midday, SE 15 in the evening, and ENE 20 after midnight.

A weather system moves in from the south on Saturday morning and a low moves inland. This brings a solid snowfall and also wind. Storm skiing is the forecast. The snow level will be less than 1000′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′-1500′ overnight. About 0.8” WE is forecast during the day, for 8-9” new. Another 0.3” WE is forecast overnight, for 3-4” more. Wind: ENE 20 early, W 30 in the afternoon, WSW 35 in the evening, and W 5 after midnight. Sunday looks clear to start and high overcast later with excellent packed powder on the ground. Monday’s system looks wet, but temps are not yet clear. What a week it’s been!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Thursday will be drizzly and showery with a chance of thunder and hail alter along with light wind. Best wind will be this afternoon: westerlies at 10-13mph from Stevenson to The Dalles. Doesn’t sound great, does it? River flow is 163kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 49F. Friday will be light westerly early and east 10mph all through the Gorge later. High temp: 51F under sunny sky. Saturday starts calm. A weather system moves in from the south and a low swings onshore. The wind rises to gusty 10-13 in the west and gusty 21-24 east of The Dalles. Flow turns more onshore in the afternoon, and the wind picks up to gusty 24-28 east of The Dalles. High temp: 49F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Light and variable wind become light westerly. 99% chance of rainbows. Friday will be showery in the morning and dry in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low-mid 30’s early and low 50’s later. Light westerlies become light easterlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday will be rainy, mixed with snow in the morning. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Calm wind early. Cycling

Well. Seems that the trails are all covered in snow again! We’re also in a freeze-thaw cycle, and trails will be especially susceptible to damage with all this moisture. Don’t ride during the day if it froze last night. Cows are in at Hospital Hill. Do not park near the corral or on Spring Street. Do not take your dog on the land. When cows are there, dogs are not allowed. That means your dog, not just dogs belonging to others. Please don’t piss off the landowners by bringing your dogs – these folks let us use their land, and we owe them respect. Also, there is logging happening on Underwood. Do not enter closed areas. Post is clear to the top of Borderline, and the gate is still closed at Binn’s Hill.
