Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Everything froze up nice and solid on the slopes last night. Down low, you’ll find bulletproof frozen granular snow. Up high, a random mix of all sorts of conditions. Nordic groom is reportedly bulletproof with poor trackset penetration. What we see is what we’ll have until next week, perhaps late Tuesday or early Wednesday, when snow returns. Improvement will come in the form of corn snow over the next few days. FYI, Meadows Nordic has a Strava race going on for the next few weeks. Look them up on Strava and participate!

Looking at Friday, we start with sun up high and some clouds in the valleys. Models insist on a chance of partly cloudy sky with scattered flurries. Hmmm…. seems unlikely, but we’ll keep it in there just in case. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Wind: NW 5-10 early, N 10+ in the afternoon, and NE 20 overnight.

Saturday will be clear. The FAF will be 1000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Wind: NE 20 early, N 10+ in the afternoon, and NNW 10+ overnight. Sunday will also be sunny. The FAF starts at 1000′, rises to 2000′ in the afternoon, and climbs to 4500′ overnight. Wind: NNW 10+ early, N 10+ later, and NNE 10+ overnight.

Monday starts clear with high clouds and warmer temps. Tuesday: high overcast and warmer transitioning to rain then snow in the afternoon. Looking deep into the future, we see a switch to a wetter pattern with significant snow accumulation likely. Have fun!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Be cautious about your trail choices right now – some are too wet to ride. If you damage the trails, people have to spend time fixing them rather than building new trails for you to ride. If you did ride the trails, the best thing you can do is 1) donate money to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards or 2) show up for every single trail work party that happens this spring.
