Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Nice to see you on the river yesterday. Shall we do it again today? We’ll have moderate westerlies to play in. Things get exciting tomorrow as a strong weather system zips into the east side in the evening (hopefully early enough). That has the potential to give us a period of very strong wind (maybe) and a round of thunderstorms. That combo isn’t great for reliable wind, but maybe if we all cross our fingers…? In the aftermath of this, Sunday’s wind will be somewhere around 20mph. Monday looks a bit windier despite a not-ideal setup. More deets to follow.

Friday starts sunny in Hood River and partly to mostly cloudy in the greater metro area. We like marine clouds! Pressures at 8am were 30.05/29.99/29.97 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.02. Modes suggest a relatively quiet morning with 14-17 from Viento to Hood River and 10-13 or less to the east. A little thermal assistance in the afternoon pushes the wind to 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Exception – Swell does not like clearing in the metro area and is likely to fall back to 14-17 after a brief rise. Models do suggest evening wind will be 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s (including Swell) with 14-17 east to Rufus and perhaps Arlington. River flow over the last 24 hours was 99-175kcfs, river temp is 70.88F, and high temp forecast is 78F for Hood River.

Saturday looks feisty! Opening play is 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell, perhaps Hood River too, with light/variable wind to the east. A low storms into the east side in the afternoon or evening. This turns gradients sharply onshore, but it also completely destabilizes the atmosphere. The potential exists for a short (1-3 hours) period of very, very strong west wind that starts in the Stevenson-Hood River zone and moves east as the low moves east. In this same time period, atmospheric instability will interfere with the ability of the wind to stay down at river level. In other words, we have a setup that’s nearly impossible to predict. Be ready to go if you see the numbers climbing, and if you want to attempt Rufus or Arlington, drive pre-emptively. It’s a risk, but you might get lucky taking that risk. It’s probably worth noting that the atmosphere will be more stable east of the Cascades, but the wind, should it materialize, will be equally short lived. High temp: 87F and muggy for Hood River and 93F for Arlington.

Post-chaos wind is forecast for Sunday. Expect the day to start cloudy west of The Dalles with 7-10mph. From Avery to Arlington, the day starts with 19-22. Afternoon wind fills in at 12-15ish from Stevenson to Mosier with gusty 20-23 from Lyle to Doug’s and 14-17 near Rufus. With low pressure offshore, the wind is likely to be, as mentioned, gusty and not super reliable.

Extended: low pressure offshore for much of next week keeps an onshore thermal gradient in place. This isn’t the right setup for super-strong wind, but we should see westerlies continue. The Euro ensemble is currently honing in on Monday as a somewhat stronger day – mid 20s in the near east (Rowena area) and far east (Rufus and beyond). After that? Some sort of usable west wind on Tuesday and Wednesday, probably, followed by (probably) lighter wind on Thursday. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a great day out there on the river!
