Gorge Wind Forecast
The eastern Gorge was the place to be yesterday. The western Gorge is where it’s at today. Offshore high pressure combines with an approaching (very) weak frontal system for gusty westerlies. Tomorrow’s wind looks stronger, as marine clouds in Portland combine with desert sunshine for a stronger day. High pressure on Sunday knocks the wind down for a day, but it returns for Monday and Tuesday.
Details for Friday: Morning gradients of .07 and .02 combine with offshore high pressure at 1029mb and an approaching front. Not ideal, that front, but not awful either. Early wind will be 11-14 from Viento to Swell, and should pick up to 14-17 from Viento to Hood River late morning. After 1pm, we’ll see average speeds rise to gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles. With this setup, Swell is likely to suffer lighter wind than other locations. River flow is 125kcfs. River temp: 69 degrees. Air temp: 80.
That front swings through on Saturday morning leaving us with a combo of clouds at all levels. Morning wind will be gusty 18-23 from Stevenson to Mosier. Average speeds climb during the day, maxing out in the afternoon at gusty 25-28 from Stevenson to Rufus with 13-16 near Arlington.
High pressure pushes inland on Sunday. Models give us 10-13 from Viento to Swell in the morning. If you believe the models, the wind will go calm the rest of the day. I’m not sure that’ll be the case, as a five degree temp difference is forecast between Portland and The Dalles. Let’s call it a big maybe for now. Monday’s wind looks like average speeds at 21-24, and Tuesday looks like 24-27.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, further restrictions are now in place. Remember: crowds lead to closures. First, kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Third, Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you are likely to be ticketed. Next, parking has been further reduced along the waterfront – various restrictions are in place due to crowding at Frog Beach. The Nichols boat dock remains closed due to crowding.

Local Events
Tonight’s most adorable event is online kitten yoga benefiting the Oregon Humane Society – search it on Facebook. Saturday’s the community Yard Sale in Parkdale, but more importantly, there’s a food, water, and hygiene product drive going for Warm Springs. You can drop off supplies at the Yard Sale, at Celilo Restaurant, Copper West Realty, or the Old Parkdale Inn.
Weekly events: there are sailboat races at the Hood River Marina every Wednesday evening. Dirty Fingers has a group mountain bike ride Thursday nights at 5:30pm. Cheno has an outdoor HIIT workout at Columbia High School in White Salmon at 6pm on Wednesday nights. That’s pretty much it for outdoor sports. There is a BLM rally every Tuesday evening at 5:30 at the Salmon Fountain in Hood River, and there’s a White Coats for BLM rally every Wednesday evening at 6pm at 12th and May. Click here for the full events calendar.
Have an awesome day!
