Friday. Beautiful day out there. Go get some of it!

There’s no gradient this morning and no wind, and that shall remain as-is for the rest of the day. And that leaves me with coming up with an opening paragraph. How about this: yesterday there were 23,596 Chinook that made it past Bonneville Dam, and there were 2074 catchable steelhead. Perhaps a nice thing to…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

In other, wind-related forecasting news, tomorrow looks slightly windier as a ridge of high pressure builds over the Northwest. Expect light west wind in the morning at less than 10mph. The wind will pick up to 14-17 or so from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon.

See below for details.

Sunday starts off with a bit more wind as an upper level low moves into BC. In the afternoon, a weak frontal system will approach you, me and everyone else in the mid-Columbia. That’s take the westerlies from 10-13 in the morning to gusty 24-27 in the afternoon from Stevenson as far east at Rufus. Given the setup, your best bet Sunday (assuming nothing changes in the forecast, and that’s a big assumption) will be Stevenson, then the Corridor for 90 minutes, then Rowena.

Out on the coast, you will have the following wind (north/central/south). Today: none/none/10-15, W swell 4′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: light/10-15/25-30, NW 4′ @ 8 seconds. Sunday: light/light/20-25+, W 5′ @ 9.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Sunday, 13-16. Sauvie’s today, no wind. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 5-8. Sauvie’s Sunday, no wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking about Cognitive Behavior Therapy a lot lately. “ZZZZZZZZ,” say 99% of you, as you skip down to the wind forecast and fish counts. CBT proposes that our thoughts cause our emotions, and that by changing our thoughts, we can change our emotions.

That’s true sometimes; we create a lot of negative emotions by crafting stories around our situations. For example, we might think, “I’m starting school next week, and I’m going to be broke, and I don’t know how I’ll pay my bills, and I’ll have to take out loans, and I’ll be in debt forever…blah, blah, blah…” and that’ll create a bunch of stress. Those are thoughts we can change (or let go of) and by changing them, we can reduce our stress.

But sometimes emotions just arise: we aren’t getting our needs met (for love, touch, companionship, etc.) and sadness arises. There are no thoughts to change – we just aren’t getting the sustenance we need, and that’s difficult on our poor little nervous systems. And we just gotta sit with that without crafting stories. Eventually those emotions will subside.

What I find interesting is that CBT is so black-and-white on this matter. The world is much more nuanced, and exceptions to everything abound. It’s a fun exercise to look for the exceptions – when you find yourself saying always/never/yes/no in answer to queries, look for the sometimes/maybes. Question the absolutes, and you’ll create a more complex, vibrant, interesting world for yourself. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a partly cloudy start to the day today, and you can expect that to continue with a few less clouds later on. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. Tomorrow starts with a few low clouds due to a possible Nothing and clears up in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, a touch more late. Sunday starts off sunny and sees some high clouds in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s late. Light wind early, moderate late. No rainbows for the three day period.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

IcecreamRoad and Mountain Biking

In trail news today, the Northwest Area, also known as Post Canyon, is now open to motorized use. Other Hood River county lands remain closed to motorized use, and SDS and Kreps lands remain closed to all uses. I didn’t make it into Post yesterday to check the dirt, so perhaps we can all do that today! If you want to help improve the 170 trail in Post, there’s a work party on Saturday at Binn’s Hill Staging area at 9.

Columbia Hills State Park was closed for a couple days due to the Horsethief Butte fire. Those trail have reopened, and the ranger requests you stay on the trail and not wander off the trail into the sensitive fire-damaged areas. He will be issuing tickets to violators.

It’s Friday, and it’s too late for all of us to make the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging for 4.1 miles gets you a free coffee and a donut. You can go on a group trail run tomorrow in Post Canyon at 8am.

Tonight at Columbia Center for the Arts, it’s Mighty Currents, a celebration of the Columbia River, with free smoked salmon and films.

Coming up tomorrow, there’s a work party on the 170 trail, meeting at Binn’s Hill Staging Area at 9. There’s a cleanup at Rooster Rock at 9. Mt. View Cycles has a women’s beginner bike ride at 9. The Bridge of the Goddess run is in Cascade locks tomorrow morning, there’s a on-the-water cleanup on the Sandy River, and the Music Festival of the Gorge is tomorrow evening at the Waterfront Park. Also tomorrow night, there’s a stargazing party at Rooster Rock.

Sunday is the Gorge Kids Triathlon. There are three free yoga classes Sunday: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga, and 6pm at Root Down.

This weekend is the Pah Bah for Pacific Hermitage. If you’re interested in meditation, there’s a half-day retreat at the White Salmon Grange on Saturday (free, 1-4 with a bonus round from 4-5). There’s a potluck and other events on Sunday, including a chance to chat with some playful, inquisitive fellows who dress differently than you do and also run large chainsaws better than you or I do.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
