Random Morning Thoughts
I’m thinking this morning about how complex the simplest interactions can be. Take this as an example: I, as you may have noticed, am a loquacious communicator. I like to play with words, express emotions, use colorful language and, in my emails and texts with close acquaintances, I like to use emoticons. My therapist, on the other hand, prefers simplicity. I experience his simple style as brusque and somewhat rude, and he experiences my style as (I hate to put words in his mouth) intrusive? Irritating? Off-putting?
None of these conclusions we’ve made are true; we’re simply communicating in different ways.
We, all of us, do this all the time. We create stories about other people’s actions, words, availability to be with us, etc., etc., etc. And then we act in accordance with the stories we’ve created, rather than in accordance with the other person’s true intent. It’s difficult to catch when we’re doing this, but it’s imperative if we want to have healthy relationships with good communication.
If you can catch yourself making an assumption, you can check in with the other person right there in the moment, and that will bring you closer together. For example, you can say to someone, “I experience your terse text messages as you not wanting to talk to me.” The other party may reply, “No, I do want to talk to you, but I’m driving and don’t want to text, but I don’t want to leave you hanging.”
The other party may also reply, “Oh for god’s sake, don’t be so sensitive,” in which case, they are blaming you and not respecting your vulnerability. If this happens a lot, you may want to reevaluate your reasons for staying connected to this person. But that’s a different issue altogether!
Back to my point – before you act on your reactions to a situation, check in with the other party. Cuz really, there’s no point in getting all riled up and upset over a creation of your imagination, now is there? Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
Quite a bit of rain is falling in the Gorge this morning, and that heavy rain will continue through early afternoon before turning showery through Saturday morning. Temps today will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. East wind early, moderate westerlies after noon, 99% chance of rainbows.
Saturday sees partly cloudy sky with on-and-off sprinkles pretty much all day. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. If the sky is clear enough Saturday morning, we’ll probably see some black ice, so be careful on the roads. Light west wind. 89% chance of rainbows.
Sunday will likely start off with the Nothing and become partly cloudy in the afternoon. Temps will be right around freezing early and in the low 40’s in the afternoon. Once again, we’re likely to see icy roads Sunday morning, so be careful out there. Light wind, no rainbows.
It’s starting to look like we may see a mix of snow, sleet and rain on Monday morning, with a better chance of sticking snow on Tuesday morning. Stay tuned for updates to this forecast!

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
I went for a jog in Post Canyon a couple days ago and was pretty stunned to see a few people mountain biking. People, it’s way too wet in there to be riding – you’ll damage the trails, and then our hard-working volunteers will have to fix them, rather than building new trails. I know, it’s hard to not go riding for weeks and weeks on end, but it’s winter, and sometimes that’s what you have to do!
